COVE R STORY UTA President’s Award Dale Ipson of DATS
BY SCOTT GODFREY This year’s recipient is well know
throughout the state and across the nation for his willingness to support safety initia- tives, provide equipment for all manner of events, especially those relating to safety and charity, and for his wise and stable leadership. Our recipient, Dale Ipson of DATS
Trucking has the ability to see beyond his own needs, or the needs specific to his com- pany, and consider what is best for the good of the whole. In a recent association meet- ing, I was impressed to hear him say; “although this will not benefit my company, and I do not think we will use it, it is good for the association and we should do it.” This is the type of leader our recipient is. ly-owned business since 1978. He has worked at all levels of the company serving as a go- fer, driver, mechanic and is now serving as the Vice President of Safety and Compliance. He has been a major contributor to the Highway Patrol and UDOT Top Hands unifor-
mity training and inspector challenge. His company has been a major support of UDOT’s ZERO Fatalities, Drive to Stay Alive and Truck Smart safety campaigns. This commit- ment bleeds beyond trucking too. He and his wife, Jolene, are huge supporters of the Dixie Regional Center’s Jubilee of Trees. They are also heavily involved in Utah Fast Pass, which supports Honoring Heroes, and the MS 150, which supports research that will lead to a cure of Multiple Sclerosis. Our recipient is an avid cyclist, having completed the LoToJa Bicycle Classic, which is a
206-mile, one-day bicycle road race from Logan, UT to Jackson Hole, WY, not just once but eight of nine times. He is also a serious runner having run the Boston Marathon and the St. George Marathon several times. That not being enough, he has combined swim- ming, biking and running to complete a couple of Iron Man Races. His greatest love is his family and enjoys being able to work closely with parents and
siblings on a daily basis. He and his wife, Jolene, are most proud of their sons Austin and Tanner and their daughter Lieghton.
Distinguished Service Award for Irene Warr Our recipient was born in 1931 in Erda, Utah and unfortunately passed away on
January 30, 2013. Having said that, it is important to pay tribute to Irene Warr by pre- senting to her posthumously one of this year’s Distinguished Service Awards. Irene entered the University Of Utah College Of Law receiving her Juries Doctor in
1957. Irene then operated her own private law firm for more than 55 years focusing on a myriad of transportation-related issues. Irene, at the time of her passing, held the oldest active legal license among Utah’s women lawyers. In 1999, the Utah Bar designated Irene the “Distinguished Lawyer of the Year” for the state of Utah. She was unbelievably loyal and trusting. Irene always made all parties know what to

expect of each other, how to respect one another, and taught us how to hold each other to higher standards. Irene did so much for the trucking industry collectively and for many of our respective companies individually. UT
