Thompson of Godfrey Trucking. Warr, who passed away Jan. 30, operated a private law firm for more than 55 years that focused on transportation-related issues. At the time of her passing, she held the oldest active legal license among all female law- yers in Utah. Thompson is a 25-year veter- an of the trucking industry who has served the past five years as chair of the UTA’s Safety Management Council and twice hosted the Rocky Mountain Regional Safety Rendezvous. Many carrier safety awards were pre-
sented. The Great West Casualty Award went to Geneva Rock Products. The event’s theme was “Look At Us
Then; Look At Us Now.” In keeping with that idea, a truck show demonstrated 11 new trucks along with five vintage ones. Kenworth Sales brought a new model along with a 1938 logger not that much bigger than a pickup truck that got a lot of atten- tion. “That was kind of fun to have the vin- tage there – the brand new 2013 and the vintage right side by side. ... The logger does get a lot of excitement because it’s such a basic piece of equipment and the engine still runs,” Mills said.
16 UTAH TRUCKING ~ Issue 2, 2013 Drew Laing, director of marketing for
Blu, said the event was a good one for ven- dors, who operated more than 40 booths. “We enjoyed another great event this year at the UTA convention,” he said. “I am always impressed at the value of our state’s trucking association. We have some very impressive fleets operating in Utah, and to have the opportunity to interact with them for a couple days is priceless. As a vendor, I appreciate the opportunity to develop busi- ness relationships whereby we can find mutually beneficial opportunities with industry partners.” While trends in the industry were the
focus of the conference’s sessions, there also were many fun and meaningful moments. The convention concluded with the Legendary Classic and President’s Cup golf tournament at the Sand Hollow Golf Resort. Activities on May 9 began with a flag ceremony featuring the Utah Highway Patrol Honor Guard and the national anthem sung by Clasby’s wife, Eileen. According to Clasby, “It was really, really patriotic and a really nice feel to begin the conference. That was really very cool.” Gold sponsors were the Beehive
