ONE GOAL Annual Conference unites trucking industry

BY STEVE BRAWNER Contributing Writer

The Utah Trucking Association’s

Management Conference and Trucking Expo brought more than 425 people to the Dixie Center in St. George May 8-10 to dis- cuss trends, to socialize, to conduct a little business, and to work together for the good of the trucking industry. “We all really have one goal,” said

Martha Mills, marketing director for Kenworth Sales and a member of the com- mittee that helped plan the event. “We’re all there to do the same thing. And that’s what’s kind of nice about this situation is we’re really not competitors down there. Yet we are, there’s still that. There’s still a competition, yes. But it’s all about the industry, and how can we make the indus-

try better and stronger.” The event was headlined by Anne Ferro,

Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration administrator, who dis- cussed her agency’s mission to reduce com- mercial vehicle-related accidents. According to Rick Clasby, UTA executive director, Ferro told attendees she understood their concerns about the agency’s CSA account- ability system, particularly regarding the process that punishes carriers for accidents that are not their fault. Ferro said the agen- cy was evaluating algorithms and scoring procedures to try to address that problem. Current and upcoming regulations also

were the topic of a panel discussion featur- ing Bob Kelleher, FMCSA division adminis- trator; Chad Sheppick, director of the Utah Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Division; and Rick Oaks of the

Each indicated their appreciation for the positive relationship enjoyed by the trucking industry and regulators and enforcers. Other presentations included a building

report by Mark Droubay of Double D Distribution, the UTA’s second vice presi- dent, who said the association had raised more than $1.4 million for its new head- quarters, which was expected to be com- pleted by mid-July. Phil Byrd, CEO of South Carolina-based Bulldog Highway Express and vice chairman of the American Trucking Associations, talked about the state of trucking nationally, including legis- lative priorities and economic conditions.
