Laguna Foundation Seeks Volunteers


SONOMA COUNTY CA. ~ The Laguna Foundation seeks volunteers who want to learn about the Laguna and share their knowledge with Sonoma County school chil- dren throughout the water- shed. Laguna Docents will be trained in the natural and cultural history of the Laguna de Santa Rosa, one of the rich- est wildlife areas in Sonoma County.

The photo is of our newest addition. Bandhu is a fishing cat. This species is native to Southern Asia. He was born in early September. There are very few Fishing cats in captivity. They actually swim under water, have webbed front paws and are endangered. He will be at the January 2014 WCA event.

The goal of the Wild Cat Education and Conservation Fund is to educate the public about the decreasing popula- tion of wild cat species around the world, to provide fund- ing for worldwide wild cat conservation projects and to provide safe refuge for captive wild cats. You may see a cougar, chee- tah, ocelot, serval, Fishing cat or Geoffroy’s cat. Each cat is shown on the stage as information about its habits, habitat and survival

activities and presentations on the science and natural his- tory of the Laguna. There will also be field trips to various sites throughout the Laguna, including sites usually closed to the public. During the train- ing, volunteers will learn how to lead the dynamic Learning Laguna educational activities for 2nd-4th grade students. The ten-week training course meets from 10:00 am -3:00 pm on consecutive Mondays from March 10 through May


19. Docent training costs $145, which includes a 200+ page training manual, mate- rials, speakers and all field trips. Partial scholarships are available. Over 200 species of birds are found in the Laguna, which also is an important stopover for thousands of birds migrat- ing along the Pacific Flyway. Terrestrial and aquatic species include river otter, bobcat, coyote, mink, badger, and two federally endangered species, the coho salmon and steelhead trout. It is also one of the few places in the world where ver- nal pools are found.

The game show contestant was only 200 points behind the leader and was about to answer the final question -- worth 500 points! "To be today's champion," the show's smiling host intoned, "name two of Santa's reindeer."


The contestant, a man in his early thirties, gave a sigh of relief, gratified that he had drawn such an easy question. "Rudolph!" he said confidently, "and ... Olive!" The studio audience started to applaud (which the little sign above their heads said to do), but the clapping quickly faded into mumbling. The confused host replied, "Yes, we'll accept Rudolph, but could you please explain 'Olive'?" "You know," the man circled his hand for- ward impatiently and began to sing, "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. "Olive,the other reindeer..."
