JANUARY 2014
DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE From My Desk By Monika Bier- Dear Readers,
Each year seems to pass more quickly – must be a sign that I am aging! The stories in the magazine this month attest to the amazing achievements over the last year. So many long termers found homes and our foster care program also expanded. The amazing stories of both Jaden now living in the UK, and Werner training as a Pets As Therapy dog. When Werner came to us he was difficult to manage and very protective of food, toys and his bed. He was a “handle with care” dog. Now look at him!
In the last year we placed around 400 dogs and our foster families have grown to well over 40. We are reaching further to rural pounds to access dogs which have otherwise had no future. In the coming 2014 year we want to do more. We have been able to take more medium sized dogs in as the volume of small dogs in council pounds diminishes and rural pounds rarely have them.
The dogs, the families and the stories in this edition are a beautiful reminder of some of our successes. The memories are sometimes all that keep me going when you are enveloped by calls and visits from people wanting to offload their dogs and tell you how inconvenient they have grown. However, the wheels are turning slowly, and I can see a change in our social attitudes toward our companion animals. We need to be proactive in sharing our experiences with rescue dogs with our friends and neighbours.
Setting up The Cottage Animal Hospital just over a year ago has had the benefit of enabling us to reach out and rescue some cats and kittens. Our work here is only small scale but we are trying to make a contribution in the plethora

of unwanted cats and kittens. Our feline families reside at the clinic and it operates as a cat adoption centre. Like abandoned Mummy Mia above with her adorable babies, Holly, Hope, Tinsel & Puddin’. All doing well at - The Cottage Animal Hospital.
