Best and Brightest Honored at Maine Maritime Academy Celebration of Achievement


Maine Maritime Academy’s annual


Celebration of Achievement was held on Thursday evening, November 7th, to honor the scholarly accomplishments of students and the service of faculty, trustees and alum- ni.


Scheel Scholars


The late Henry A. Scheel of Rockport, Maine was one of America’s most respected naval architects and yacht designers. During his long and distinguished career, Mr. Scheel produced more than 250 complete designs which have been utilized by builders of sailboats and other craft in the U.S. and Eu- rope. To express his high regard for Maine Maritime Academy, in 1994 Mr. Scheel left funds to permanently endow scholarships for students in the three upper classes who best exemplify intellectual curiosity and achievement. Laurie E. Flood, professor of engineer- ing from Castine, Maine, was promoted to the rank of full professor at the conclusion of the 2012-2013 academic year. Her pro- motion was based on her extensive service to the engineering program and more than 12 years of dedication to teaching excellence at the college. Flood, a State of Maine Third Class Stationary Engineer, U.S.C.G. Third


Assistant Engineer, Steam and Motor Ves- sels, earned a B.S. from Maine Maritime Academy (Class of 1993), a M.S. in Envi- ronmental Engineering from the University of Maine, and a Master in Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. She was appointed to the college faculty in 2001.


Wall of Honor Inductee


The 2013 Wall of Honor inductee is the late Susan J. Clark, who graduated valedictorian of the class of 1985, and who was a highly respected captain, Portland Harbor pilot, MMA trustee, and member of her community. Accepting the award in her honor was her brother, Joe Clark (Class of 1983). A 70-foot navigation training vessel was re-dedicated and named the Capt. Susan J. Clark at Homecoming this fall to honor her memory.


Trustee Service Marion Morgan, a member of the Maine


Maritime Academy Board of Trustees from 2008-2013, was honored for her service to the Academy with the gift of a traditional wooden rocking chair.
