Island Marine in Eliot has most of their boats hauled up and covered for the winter. They are now beginning their win- ter work projects. All their storage boats need some degree of work before they can be relaunched next spring. As with most yards, the majority of work will be paint and varnish. There is also some electrical, mechanical and repowers to do. A 70 foot Hatteras is in to have her plumbing redone. This includes work on the heads, fi xtures and hoses. She will then have some cosmetic work done.

They also have a contract with the New Hampshire Oil Response boats in keeping them serviced and ready.

On the marina front everything is look- ing up after the completion of the replace- ment bridge between New Hampshire and

Maine. During the construction there was an immense amount of noise, especially from a 5 foot drilling bit as they tried to go through some granite. As usual there was a lack of support for the negative impact. Over and above the noise there was a lot of debris and those with boats in their two marinas on Badger’s Island most opted not to stay during the work. Now that the work is completed, they have started to come back. Already wet storage is up three times over what it was last year. They are also making sure that everything will be perfect for the 2014 season.

General Marine in Biddeford is cur- rently working on a new cabin mould for their 36 footer. They have made design changes so that it is sleeker and much better

looking than the old one.

In the shop is a 36 footer that is being completed as a tuna boat for a customer from Nantucket. They are presently working on the interior and cockpit. Down below she sports a V-berth, head and shower and over and under berths. Most of the work here is just fi nish details. Up in the shelter is the galley, settee and helm station and they are working on wiring and plumbing in this area. Out in the cockpit are an icebox, control sta- tion and bait well, which are all being faired and readied for paint. She is scheduled to be done this spring.

They have another 36 to fi nish off as a

sport fi shermen for a customer from New Jersey. This is a semi-complete boat with a V-berth and head. She will be powered with a C-9 Caterpillar diesel. They will start this

They also have some repair work to do on several of their storage boats. One has a leak in the hull and another needs to be re-powered and will be getting a 454 gas engine.

Robinhood Marine in Robinhood recently launched an Oyster 41, for a Mas- sachusetts customer, which then headed to the Caribbean for the winter. While she was in, they upgraded her systems and added a high-tech carbon fi ber rudder, which sported Jefa bearings made in the Netherlands. Her fi rst stop was Newport, Rhode Island, where she met 15 or 20 other boats that were going to head south together.

Like many yards along the Maine coast most of the work this winter includes bottom jobs, paint jobs and re-powers, along with the usual annual maintenance. A more involved project this winter will be on a Cape Dory 28, which was recently sold to a customer from New Hampshire. She will be undergoing a complete refi t this winter and will stay there at the marina during the summers. Some of the work includes replacing tankage, new engine and reverse gear, stripping the bottom, applying a barrier coat, and adding electronics. Most of the boats have been hauled at this time, but there was still about 30 left to go in early November.
