Due to the Digital Age there have been a lot of changes, some for the better and some not. I listen to people knock some of the technological advances, but if they really thought about it they would realize that they could benefi t from some of them. Take the cell phone and what it has evolved into over the years. For those of us on the road, it saves time and allows us to keep up with issues much more easily. The cell phone is now much more and now you get your e-mails, read and upload to Facebook, keep up with items for sale on e-bay, and stay connected on Twitter. Staying contacted is okay and could be worth it in a business-sense, but it can take a lot of time. For me, I do post what I see in the boat shops and other interesting things from the road on Facebook, but it is not as frequent as it should be.

One of my loves is books and I am constantly asked if I have gone to e-books. Well, simply they do not publish the books I read digitally. I am sure there might be a few, but all of the books I read are focused on maritime history. Also a number of the books I use are older, some dating back into the 1800s. With the limited number of people interested in such titles it may be a long time before they are digitized. A problem I have with the newer books is that a number of authors, some of them the most noted, do extremely poor research in documenting the facts. Some of these publishers just do not care if it is accurate so long as it sells. Publishers used to check the facts, fortunately there are a few that still do. Someone will read a book and think what they read is true. Well like the internet not everything is true. It all comes down to

verifying the source. Most of these writers and publishers are just looking for the quick dollar and quick fame. I recently heard someone question Nathaniel Philbrick’s book “Mayfl ower.” When I saw someone who knew the history of MAYFLOWER I asked just how accurate it was and the reply was that the research and facts were lacking. This now makes me wonder about his other books. Let us not even discuss the issues of Tom Clancy. One book that struck closer to my realm is the person who wrote on the big schooner disasters. After two months of research the book was published and the amount of omitted material is staggering. Basically a waste of good trees. Writing a well researched book takes years and years to do. If you have ever wondered why someone only writes one book that is one of the factors. The other is it does not pay, you do it for the love. One publisher I do have a lot of respect for and that is the Naval Institute. Over the years I have accumulated and read a num- ber of their books. The most recently being Thomas Pocock’s “Breaking the Chains, The Royal Navy’s War on White Slavery,” James H. Ellis’ “Mad Jack Percival, Legend of the Old Navy” and now David Skaggs’ “Thomas MacDonough, Master of Com- mand of the Early U. S. Navy.” These are well researched, very easy reading and for me have shed light on some lesser known aspects of our navy as well as the Royal Navy. No these are not for everyone. They Digital Age is great and allows one access to information much more easily, but still the bottom line is if the research is poor the result is poor.
