Hadden Boat in Georgetown is getting ready to head south to North Carolina for three months. While there he will work on ELIZABETH II, which he has done for several years. This year they will be work- ing on the weather, main and after deck and forecastle. They have a lot of detail work to do, including making channels and rails. This past summer was a little slower

than normal. They worked on fi nishing the wiring on a 21 foot launch built in 1904. This is a boat, also known as a knockdown and was built by the Valley Boat & Engine Company. She is powered with a two cyl- inder two cycle make and brake Palmer engine. The frames were replaced as needed, and the keelson inside, along with fl oors, engine beds, bulkheads, ceiling and seating was replaced too. They then refastened and re-caulked the hull and then bathed her in linseed oil. There was no rot in the boat just broken pieces.

In the shop right now is a 25 foot Crosby cat, which was built at Newbert & Wallace in Thomaston. She is in for storage and some minor work over and above her usual annual maintenance. Other work this win- ter includes annual maintenance on several boats stored outside, such as a Cat’s Paw dinghy. He then needs to head to Newport, RI to work on OLIVER HAZARD PERRY. He will add a sliding companionway hatch and two raised panel doors.

Boothbay Region Boat Yard on Southport Island has some interesting proj- ects underway.

In one shop is GITANA, which is in having her cockpit rebuilt along with some other much needed repairs. For those that follow the Maine Retired Skippers Race will remember her as one of the competitors for years sailed by Ernest Burt of Brooksville. Workers have replaced a couple of planks, fi lled the seams, rebuilt the rudder, replaced framing and coamings in the cockpit, re- placed the companionway face, replaced some deck beams and repaired the bulkhead. Next to her is a beautiful wooden lobster boat, which was formerly owned by Earl Brewer. She is having her cockpit replaced, which has included replacing fl oor timbers, garboards, refastening and a whole new transom. Some of the work has been done by her owner too, and will be used by his daughters for lobstering.

Last winter they did some major work on a Penbo, which meant rebuilding her bow. This winter is phase 2, which will include replacing the house and fl ybridge. Last winter they replaced the rail on a

NORTHERN RANGER is in and has had her engine removed, which is now being rebuilt.

Most of the work at the yard will be normal annual maintenance, which includes a lot of paint and varnish. They also have fi ve repowers to do with outboards.

Flowers Boat Shop in Walpole is busy. They have a 43 foot sport fi shing boat underway for a customer from Long Island, NY. They are currently working on her interior, which includes a queen and double berth, head and shower with galley up. She is powered with a 825 hp Iveco diesel. She is scheduled to be done this spring. A Flowers 38 is being fi nished off as a live aboard cruiser for a customer from Maryland. They are working on her interior as well. One difference on this boat is that her cabin top will be extended all the way to the transom. She is powered with a 450 hp Iveco diesel engine.

They also have a couple of kit boats heading out, which includes two 36s to Cape Island on Cape Cod. A 31 BHM is in for a refi t. She is being repowered with a 74 series Volvo diesel and will be receiving a new top with windows. A 37 Repco is in for a refi t and repower. She will be repowered with a Cummins diesel.

Buxton Boat in Sunset is currently working on the 1903 Oyster sloop. Her fram- ing is almost done, and Peter is currently replanking the hull. At last visit he had fi ve strakes on each side completed. Once this is done he will build a centerboard trunk. Her interior will be simple and will not take long to do. She is scheduled to be done this coming summer.

The English cutter, which is been at the shop for several years, is nearly fi nished. She has been moved outside and fi nal details will be done this spring so she can be launched. Remaining details include some painting and varnish, put in a table, do wiring and lighting, and rigging.

Eric Dow Boatbuilder in Brooklin is already getting a jump on his spring work. Presently he is doing boats that go home to their owners.

In the shop he has a Walt Simmons

wherry, which he is painting for a customer who has offered the boat for sale. Also in the shop is a peapod, which is also in need of paint. A big job this winter will be on a Dark Harbor 17. They have stripped her bottom,

rebolted her keel, replaced six frames around the mast step, and refastened bilge stringers. A Haven 12½ is in to be refi nished. She also has two or three cracked frames and some deck issues that need to be addressed.

In Hall’s Quarry John Williams Boat-

building will be busy this winter. In the shop they have a Bunker & Ellis 39, which they are replacing the cockpit in. The cockpit sole has been removed and frames underneath will be replaced as needed and then they replace the hatches. Once this done they will put back down the platform, which will be fi r. There was also some other minor carpentry and mechanical work needed before she is ready for next spring. A Bristol 41.1 is back after a three-year cruise to the Caribbean and in much need of a major overhaul. The majority of work will be paint and varnish but also she needs repairs to her windlass, upgrade to her systems and new electronics. A Concordia 44 is in to have her hull and deck painted. She will also have some mechanical and electrical work done. The 1905 or 1925 GAMECOCK, an

R-boat, is in. They have wooded her exterior, bottom and top sides, re-caulked and is ready to be repainted. She will also be varnished.

Marine Systems in Manset is getting ready to have a 39 foot Stanley come in for some repair work. This 24-year-old lobster boat will get a new fi r platform. They will also replace any framing underneath that needs to be.

After this a 38 South Shore lobster boat is coming in to be repowered. She will be getting a 375 hp John Deere diesel engine. She will also have some work done under- neath her deck due to some fi re damage. Recently completed was a 34 Calvin Beal, which was in to be repowered. She received a 420 hp Iveco diesel engine. Owner Eric Clark was also working on building lobster tanks for stores, which is good fi ll-in work. He does just the base as the acrylic tops are made elsewhere.

Bass Harbor Boat in Bernard has got most of their storage customers up. Now they are starting their winter work. In the shop is a 36 foot Ronald Rich

built boat. They replaced her stuffi ng boxes, engine hanger in the rear, fuel lines, shifter cables, bilge pump system, exhaust and some rewiring.

Another Ronald Rich boat in is, MARY B., which is thought to be his last boat. She was built as a commercial/pleasure boat and is being converted to all pleasure. They will be moving her engine aft, center the companionway and fi nish the interior off in the Herreshoff style. They will also cut in her seams on the hull, adding a muffl er and do some cosmetic work. A 32 foot wooden Grand Banks is in for brightwork and new fuel tanks.

They also have a Robert Rich 30 footer, which needs to have her shelter replaced. Chummy Rich, along with his brother

Walter, are working at Walter’s garage build- ing a 34 foot custom wooden boat on spec. This might keep the two out of trouble, but…
