30 highlight images ready if games ended at 9:30-10pm and there are up to 5000 frames to go through.
Our digital darkroom generally consists of two software programs, Photo Mechanic and Adobe Lightroom. Photo Mechanic allows me to edit my images quickly and pull out the best ones from the day. I then move those into Lightroom for a little cropping and touch up. The rest of the images, hundreds, maybe thousands of shots go up more slowly over the course of subsequent weeks. Then I do my best to let all of you know about them
Backgrounds Port-a-potties. They are the bane of our existence as photographers. One of my fellow UltiPhotos shooters once said “You’ll never see a port-a-potty in Sports Illustrated”. I don’t know if you’ll ever see one of my pictures there either, but if I did make it, there wouldn’t be a toilet in the shot.
I work very hard to eliminate anything distracting in my backgrounds. I do my best avoid things like light posts, parking lots, soccer goals, toilets, tents, garbage cans and roadways to name a few.
You can reduce unavoidable distractions by shooting as “wide-open” as possible. This means shooting with an aperture of 2.8 or 4 if possible which will blur the background, helping to eliminate these distractions .
It also helps to get your subject closer to you and the offending objects farther away (hence that long lens you see me lugging around). Sometimes these background blights are unavoidable, but if I shoot smart and position myself well, they can be reduced to blurry, inoffensive smudges.
Post-Game
When the games are over, I’ve still got a lot of work to do. At UltiPhotos, we try to post highlights the same day as our action was shot. It can be challenging to get

Lots to think about, lots of time involved, lots of things I can’t control but nearly every Ultimate game provides a number of opportunities to make great images. Few sports can offer as much consistent action at either end of the field, with great access and with such amazing athletes.
