TEAM CANADA

is almost impossible to remember. It was this visceral state on field that made the times off the field with this team just that much more memorable. From ice bathes to nightly yoga sessions, it is indescribable the feelings and sentiments that arose from living with your teammates with whom for the months leading up to and during this culmination put their heart and soul on the line in order to achieve something great together.

Team Canada Women > Jordan Meron

Playing in the World Championships in Toronto was an amazing way to culminate my international career as a junior player. For many reasons, too many to name in fact, this team will always have a special place in my heart. As most of you know, this was an extremely talented group of young women. What you might not know is that it was also a group of hilarious, intelligent and inspiring people. What made this team different for me was that despite the fact that we had all come from different backgrounds, I was able to find common ground with every one of my teammates. At the risk of sounding cliché, I think it is really amazing that twenty strong willed women all vying for those “starting positions” were able to come together quickly and support each other so honestly over our short season. Only in Ultimate can you find that kind of team love.

When we got to Toronto we meant business. In comparison to the U20 worlds team, where the social aspect can sometimes overshadow the tournament, this team seemed focused from the get go. Of course that’s not to say we didn’t have fun together. As a team we found our own ways to get to know each other over the season, from euchre to McDonald’s trips to team socials to the long-time favorite Werewolf game. As I got to

know my teammates, I realized how much this team meant to them. Their fierce commitment to our goal of winning the tournament was a source of inspiration for me. I think we were all able to push a little bit harder because we knew that we were playing for and with each other. I have never before felt team unity like I did with this team.

I don’t think anything in my ultimate career can or will ever compare to playing in the World Championships at home in Toronto. We were lucky enough to have a showcase game against the United States during pool play, and the atmosphere was electric. I will never forget looking up at the crowd and seeing all of the people from the Ultimate community and from our own personal lives who came out to support us. From homemade signs to parents leading cheers to Sachin’s foghorn, the crowd was absolutely wild. I thought at the time that I needed to remember all of those moments that I looked up at the crowd, because that was going to be one of the coolest things I ever got to do in my life. Playing in front of our friends and loved ones really did make my U23 experiences completely unforgettable. While we didn’t achieve our gold medal goal, I am so proud of our bronze. As sad as it is for many of us “old” ladies to know that we won’t be returning to the international stage as juniors, I am so happy that this amazing group of coaches and players was the team that I ended this part of my career with. TC Hoorah!
