REGIONAL INTEREST

this annual Ultimate Tournament. This year was no different.

Aptly named, “Hold Back the Snow” the tournament has seen its fair share of snow and wind over the years. Yet the spirit of the players, organizers and volunteers always manage to make the tournament experience seem a little bit warmer than what the meteorologists says. In 1994, the tournament started with just four Junior High School teams playing on the soccer fields at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School. The 2013 edition featured 25 High School Teams and 10 Middle School Teams that took over Assiniboine Park.

“Hold Back the Snow” is the brainchild of Dean Wright. Wright is a teacher in the Middle School at St. John’s-Ravenscourt, Head of the Ultimate program and Head Coach of the St. John’s-Ravenscourt High School team. He has seen this tournament grow over the years from the “quaint” yet hotly contested games of two St. John’s-Ravenscourt teams, 1 from Sandy Bay School and another from Ecole LaVerendrye to the 3-day event that included 35 teams!

A huge collection of volunteers and organizers from the St. John’s-Ravenscourt Parents Association and the Manitoba Organization of Disc Sports are now needed to make the event run smoothly. This years’ tournament included all the tournament play, an opening ceremonies which included a whole tournament warm up, and a Chinese Drumming exhibition as well. The tournament organizers also recognized the commitment of the coaches for all of the teams by hosting a coaches appreciation dinner for all the coaches of the tournament (it was a delicious meal)!
