Perimeter access gates arenormally electrohydraulicorelectromechanical powereddevices that areusedmainly to let vehicles in andout andare normallysemi automatic. Accesstothe site is usuallyby means of ahandheldremotecontrol device or postmountedkey padaccessible fromthe driver’s window.Vehiclesexitthe site by using an automatic controller activated by a vehicleproximity detector/sensor, aremote controldeviceormanuallyoperatedpush button. All gatesshouldhaveamanually operatedemergencyopening systemforuse in theevent of apower failureorother system failure. Themost common typesofgates in use aresliding gates, swinggates andthe powered roller shutterdoor, although otheroptions are available. In 2010 twoyoung childrenwhobecame

trapped in poweredgates died becausetheir presencewas notdetectedatthe closingedge of thegates andbecausethe closingforce was excessive. As aresult, TheHealth&Safety Executive (HSE) issued two safety notices in that year giving detailsofthe risksand, the protectionmethods required to minimise risk of injury or death.

The first step in this process is toemploy a

suitable organisation such as an appropriately qualifiedgatemaintenance/installerorone of theindependent engineeringinspection andcertificationcompanieswhoare trained on this type of plant. They will carryout risk assessmentsand athoroughexamination of theequipment andwillprepare aspecification formodernisation. If at this time, the installation is found to be

Newgates will then need to be installedthatmeetcurrent health &safety regulations. For more on electric gates, go towww.
