Art deco is a design style that rose to popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. It took itsinspirationfrom themachine age – the


engineering andtechnical advances beingmade at the beginning of the twentieth century – and was characterised by


symmetricalshapes, rich coloursand cleanlines complemented by lavish ornamentation.Notable examples of art deco

Shealsodeals with day-to-day enquiriesfrom residentsand prospective leaseholders and tackles themyriadsmall problems thrown up by a residential block. “It requires real commitmentand dedication,” shesays, explainingthatnoday is thesameasthe next andyou need theability to “effectivelyjuggle allthataday canbring”whileretaininga good senseofhumourand asympathetic ear for those residentswho comeknocking at her door.Sometimes beingonsiteratherthan workingremotelyinanofficecanmean there arereallydifficult situations to deal with, she explains, such as elderly residents with dementia,withnofamilyaroundtohelp. In one case we had to deal with a resident up to 35 timesaday over aperiodofmonths”,she says. Noella is well-placedtomanageDuCane Court. With 25-years’ experience of the industry under her belt she has run a number ofmultiple blocks of various sizes and both newand oldbuildingsindifferentparts of thecountry.Amemberofthe Associationof ResidentialManagingAgents(ARMA)she sits on its council and is chair of the Technical Committee,in2009Noellawas announced as London PropertyManagerofthe Year in theNewsonthe BlockPropertyManagement Awards.Thisaccolade is very specialtoher as hernamewas putforward followinganumber of direct individualnominationsmade by herresidents.Ifproof were needed of Noella’s commitmenttoher job,whenpresenting heraward thejudgescommented that she is “a very hands on propertymanagerwho impressed us by her 100% contribution to the building andstrongleadershipintimes of crisis”For flatownersatDuCaneCourt,It doesn’t getmuch better than that.●

Art deco style can be spottedinall areasof designfromthe colourful geometric shapes of Clarice Cliff’s china to the sunburst designs on old radios and jukeboxes. Artdecowas used extensively for public projects such as railway stations andocean liners and the front ofDuCane Court has been likened in its appearance to that of three ocean liners standing proud overBalhamHigh Road.
