Too many times in recent years, Americans have turned on the new to find out about a disgruntled employee who has walked into a workplace and simply opened fire on innocent co-workers. In the majority of workplace violence cases, there is a warning sign or a threat that is made against an employee or the work facility. To help prevent some of these tragedies, Darin LaHood, Illinois Senator sponsored House Bill 2590, which becomes law on Jan. 1. HB 2590 will enable employers to seek restraining orders against disgruntled workers or others who have made a documented threat against an employee or the workplace. The bill was an initiative of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, business organizations and corporations such as Caterpillar, Inc. The bill creates the Illinois Workplace Violence Prevention Act, which would allow employers to apply for an order of protection from their local court jurisdiction.
