2013 Workplace Violence Benchmark Survey: How Do You Compare To Other Employers? By: Bruce T. Blythe

Comprehensive Workplace Violence (WPV) Programs have evolved into effective prevention and threat response strategies. Signifi- cant positive results have clearly demonstrated successful results. Most notably, the U.S. Postal Service moved from being the “poster child” for mass shootings to an abatement of any employee-related shootings for over eight (8) years after implementing their Comprehensive WPV Program. Many of the components of the USPS program are included in the survey questions annotated below. These questions and comparisons to other employers can serve as a template to assess your WPV preparedness and provide ideas for improvements.

In August of 2013, three companies 1 commonly owned by crisis management specialist, Bruce T. Blythe, asked 12,500 managers

from a broad spectrum of mostly large and medium-sized companies to complete the following survey questions related to their WPV preparedness. Responses from 137 companies were received. Forty percent (40%) had over 10,000 employees and 74% reported more than 1000 employees.

Formal Threat Response Teams have been established within 52% of the responding employers. Of those established teams, 29% had been trained in the last 12 months, with 25% being trained at least once per year. Thirty-five (35%) percent have a structured Threat Response Team manual with guidelines for managing threatening workplace situations, e.g., investigating and assessing threats, defusing/responding, follow up, and disengagement guidelines.

Participating employers were predominately from the U.S., with additional responses coming from Austria, Asia/Pacific, Germany, Australia, Argentina, and Finland. Due to interest, the same survey was redistributed upon request to an expanded number of employers throughout Australia and results of that survey will be available in October 2013.

Police are investigating an incident in which a man pulled a gun on a J.C. Penney security agent at Battlefield Mall in Springfield, Missouri and held the weapon to the man's head. The man, who was wanted for shoplifting, held the gun on a loss prevention employee after the employee confronted him for the suspected theft of two pairs of sneakers, according to police. The suspect fled after displaying the gun, police said. No injuries were reported. The suspect has not been located, according to police spokeswoman Lisa Cox. She described the suspect as a skinny white male in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with shaggy hair that hung over his ears while he was wearing a hat.
