expertguidance Q&A CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Drs. Mackenzie and Oscar Romero, both practicing chiropractors, provided expert guidance for the following health question:
Q: My infant seems to prefer to tilt his head to
one side and doesn’t like to turn his head in one direction. Can chiropractic help?
A: What you are describing may be a condition called torticollis, or wryneck, which is a relatively common condition
in infants and children. It presents as a noticeable tilt of the head to one side with a rotation of the chin away from that side. There are two types: congenital and acquired. Congenital torticollis is noticed in infants, and common causes are improper position in the womb or tugging on the neck during the birth. Parents may notice that the infant prefers a certain head position while in a car seat, sleeping or breastfeeding or that he or she avoids turning in one direction due to pain. Acquired torticollis occurs in children of all ages; it can even occur in adults. It is usually caused by strenuous activity, mild traumas including head bumps, or sudden changes in neck position. The condition causes pain and spasms in one side of the neck, which makes it difficult to maintain a straight posture or to turn in one direction. Chiropractic care produces great results in both types of torticollis.
Chiropractic analyzes and corrects areas of misalignment in the spine and musculoskeletal system. The spine houses the spinal cord and has exiting nerves that transmit information between the brain and all parts of the body. Altered vertebral joint position and aberrant motion cause stress to the nerve communication. This is known as subluxation. Correcting the misalignments by realigning the vertebral column restores motion and removes impedance to the function of the nerves. Proper alignment allows for maximum nervous system communication and body performance potential. In both types of torticollis, spasm of the sternocleidomastoid muscle is present. This is the cause of the awkward head and neck position. Chiropractic analysis often reveals subluxation in the neck and mid to upper back. With chiropractic adjustments, proper nerve function is restored, leading to appropriate muscle tone and correct neck and head posture.
