Spiritual Journeys, Visiting John of God Interview by Marie-Claire Wilson


Two Years ago a friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer. She refused surgery and sought alterna- tives including dramatic changes in her diet, and natural medicines and healing therapies. She also visited New York and received a healing from John of God. A short time after visiting John of God, her cancer was gone. Her MD monitoring her condition was shocked but open to explanations other than those normally accept- ed in Western medicine. So when I encountered Gail Thackray’s SPIRITUAL JOURNEY VISITING WITH JOHN OF GOD, it touched a special place in my heart, and I knew I had to interview her about the book.


MCW What inspired you write this beautiful and very touching book?


GT I felt that this was an extraordinarily powerful place and it had such an incredible impact on my life that I absolutely had to share it with the world.


I hadn’t originally thought about writing a book. I start- edmaking notes, like journaling about my adventures. Often that’s what people feel when they read my book. People say things like “it felt like I was there with Gail” or they say it reads very chatty and down-to-earth. Most of all, people say they actually feel the energy; they feel like they experience the journey of John of God with me and I love that!


MCW For our magazine’s readers who have not yet read your book, can you please describe your experi- ence with John of God? Did you go to him for healing? What did you experience during and after your healing with him?


GT I didn’t think I was going for a healing at all. As a medium and a teacher of Reiki healing, I thought I was going simply out of interest and perhaps I could help out somehow. As soon as I got there the spirits said to me, “You can leave your ego at the door, you’re here for a healing too!”


When I stood in front of John of God for the first time, I was awestruck. It was like standing in front of the Divine. I did receive a healing. It was much more than I expected. Like for most there, the healing is not just physical, it is deeper than that. Healing takes place on many levels: spiritually, emotionally, and physically. It is like a reconnection to Source. One suddenly feels the purpose of life.


MCW Why did you choose to make this trip at this time in your life?


GT I had been a medium for about five years when I went to John of God. I wasn’t born a medium, but rather I suddenly woke up when I was about forty. Some people go through a midlife crisis. I was suddenly able to talk to dead people and do other freaky stuff! I was teaching Reiki healing and how to connect with the spirit world, so I thought it would be great to meet John of God. But I didn’t have a major health issue or feel an

urgency to go. Then an astrologer, Susan Baroni, came to my healing center and told me that I needed to travel for my birthday to have better astrological influences for the upcoming year. Where did she pick out of any- where in the world? Brasilia! Clearly I was being drawn to be there.


MCW I was very impressed by the way John of God per- forms his healing. Can you talk about how he learns of a patient’s condition and how he approaches treatment for each person?


GT John of God is what is called a transmedium. This is someone who is able to actually take a spirit inside his or her body. So as people go in front of John of God, they are not actually seeing the man John, but rather a beautiful benevolent spirit inside his body. The spirits are able to read a person’s energy. They can literally change someone’s energetic makeup to remove illness- es as well as other emotional and even financial issues.


MCW I watched the video Joao de Deus (Just a Man), about John of God and his healings. I was very surprised by the way he performs esoteric surgery, with seem- ingly no infections or problems. Can you talk about this ... is this part of the miracle of his healing?


GT If the spirit recommends a spiritual intervention (spiritual surgery) this would normally be like a medi- tation with a blessing. However, a person can request an actual physical surgery. John of God says this is not necessary but some people just can’t wrap their head around it. They might say “I can’t believe he can heal my cancer from a sort of prayer; he needs to actually do something to me physically.” So for a few volunteers a day the spirit will take these people on stage and lit- erally cut them open with no anesthetic. When you see this you have to know that there must be spiritual forces at play. People literally have tumors removed on stage and feel no pain whatsoever.


MCW How do individuals generally respond to John of God’s healing, both during treatment and afterward? Generally, what are the results of the healings?


GT I’ve seen miraculous results. I’ve seen people get up and walk for the first time, their cancers disappear, and their eyesight is restored. But more importantly, I have seen people’s lives completely change. It’s as if they receive a new direction, a new lease on life, renewed faith. For some it’s instantaneous and for others it takes a while, although not everyone gets healed. John of God says he does half the work and we must do the other half. Often people start to realize why they have an issue in their life or why an illness came to them. We have to take responsibility for everything in our life, both the good and the bad. Often the real gift in spiri- tual healing is for us to find our way.


MCW Has your life changed after your visit with John of God … as an individual and as a medium?
