[EDITOR’S NOTE] Upcoming Events 2013

On our way home from a recent vacation, my family and I drove a narrow section of road in the mountains of North Carolina. As our car hugged the edge of a steep gorge carrying the Cullasaja River, my eyes fi xated on the small amount of steel serving as the lifeline between laid asphalt and an unobservable canyon below. I couldn’t help but hold my breath as I saw the steep drop-off , and was faced with the challenge of appreciating the wonder of

such a sight while struggling with my nerves. Looking down, I can only imagine what Nik Wallenda felt as he recently crossed the Grand Canyon, untethered, on a 2” wire. To say the least, my mountain pass seemed elementary in comparison. But each situation is a reminder that trust is not an easy practice. Trust is an accord between someone or something that is based on reliability and strength. In Wallenda’s case, he relied on O’Connell Electric (for the second time, the fi rst being

his walk across Niagara Falls) and rope manufacturer, Wirerope Works, for his ‘high profi le’ high wire walk. Very rarely are rigging projects tested under such a spotlight where a job well done truly means life or death. Wallenda understood fi rsthand how essential the part his rigging team played and trusted them to do their job precisely and assist him safely across the line.

Also in this issue of the Wire Rope Exchange, we feature two well-known companies,

Manchester Sling and Mammoet, who have forged a new partnership built on these same principles that will provide each company with a new level of consistency and increased capability. And fi nally, Barnhart Crane lends its well-earned expertise in transporting and positioning the largest tunneling machine ever built for North America. Aff ectionately named Bertha, it is a 57.5’ diameter unit, which will bore a 1.7-mile long tunnel to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle, Washington. Back on that mountain pass, I was relieved not to be on a 2” cable staring down a gorge.

But I did better understand the sense of security and trust in the partnership Wallenda had with his rigging team. As I took in the view, I felt a sense of security in the system entrusted to keep my path clear. I’m always interested in your stories; please email me with your news. As always, thank you for being a part of Wire Rope Exchange!
