Approximately 86,000 people in Scotland (7,500 in Edin- burgh) have dementia and this number is expected to double over the next 25 years. This means that we are all likely to be affected by

dementia in one way or another. Family members, friends, work colleagues, neighbours and customers may already be living with dementia, or may receive a diagnosis in years to come.

Scotland has a National Dementia Strategy which

arguably leads the world in its thinking, but there is no room to be complacent. With the increasing demand for services and finite resources, it is crucial that we all become demen- tia aware. Self Directed Support has the potential to trans- form the range of services which people with dementia can access, by transferring control from statutory bodies to individuals. This will only happen if there is a diverse mar- ket, with numerous providers offering a broad range of services. And, crucially, people need to know what options are available to them and how they can access them.

At Home Instead Senior Care, we

have committed to doing our bit by launch- ing a Dementia Awareness Programme. Based around our accredited staff ‘Demen- tia CARE’ training programme, we offer free awareness and training sessions. These both inform you about dementia, and challenge you to either think about dementia for the first time, or perhaps think differently about it.

We chose National Dementia Awareness Week (3 to

9 June 2013) to launch the programme and marked it by collaborating with local band Einstein’s Wardrobe to launch a charity single in support of Alzheimer Scotland. ‘Picture on the Mantlepiece’ reflects life from the perspective of a person with dementia and was performed live to an audi- ence of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament during dementia awareness week. Further details about Home Instead’s awareness pro-

gramme are available from our website here.
