The 2013 RSNC National Finals was a huge success! It has brought so much attention and excitement to our sport that this upcoming year is expected to continue to skyrocket. Once again, we broke all attendance records, with 6,734 teams competing. In addition there was a new cash and prize record set with over $600,000 awarded and paid out. I guarantee there were a lot of happy winners taking home their share of the loot!
The move to Fort Worth was also very exciting. This facility rolled out the red carpet and provided us an entire week all for ourselves to spread our wings and grow. Throughout the week we utilized a total of 9 sorting pens in 3 different arenas. The stalling was first class with brand new Priefert stalls for the first 800 and then even more stalls for the overflow. One thing about Fort Worth there are plenty of stalls and arenas available.
This year the World Series was introduced and those who participated were aptly rewarded with the largest single class prize line in the history of the sport. In addition to saddles at the Regionals, and cash all along the way, those that made it and entered the Finals got to share in $40,000 added cash plus the winners each received a beautiful horse trailer sponsored by Wayne Hodges and 4 Star Trailers. Not only that, but in the final go a wire got crossed and a contestant was given a no time instead of 4 head which was brought to my attention after the placings were already announced. With this, the outcome would have actually given a contestant 1st place rather than 4th place. I immediately announced that I did not want to re-announce the placings in such a prestigious class and therefore I would do the right thing and buy an additional trailer so two contestants could go home thrilled with a 1st place prize. Mistakes happen from time to time, but as always, a little understanding and a positive attitude will cultivate positive results. Congratulations trailer winners, Tony Gibbs, Kevin Pearce and Michael Squires! What a thrilling outcome to a great competition!
We also introduced the RSNC Futurity and Maturity. This program not only showcased the horses that were involved but it also brought attention to the ranches and breeders that are supplying horses for us to purchase and ride. There were 123 horses that competed in these classes for over $60,000. That is a huge success for the first year of this program and with all of the positive feedback it is just the beginning of something huge.
As many of you know, RSNC likes to think out of the box and be progressive in all that we do. So far, most of our ideas have worked extremely well and that has been proven by your support and a membership that is now nearing 20,000! When Van Gemmill and I started RSNC we had several goals in mind. Create a fun family atmosphere so participants have fun whether they win or not. Give everyone an opportunity to compete in classes so they could have a fair opportunity to win. Make it big so we could bring in sponsors, creating opportunities to ride for sponsorship monies and prizes, rather than all of us trading our own money.
Opportunities like the Lucky Duck class, Bareback Sorting, the Sadie Hawkins and even the Turtle Races are great examples of fun. The Beginners, Graduated Beginners, Rookie and Graduated Rookie are great examples of entry level classes that new contestants can compete in fairly. An astounding 6,734 teams is a true testament that we are big and with that, over $200,000 in cash and prizes were added awards that were not part of the jackpotted $400,000 paid out. That makes this event exceed a 100% payback!!! Mission accomplished!
No one can ever rest on his or her laurels and RSNC is no exception. We want to continue to grow this sport so each of you can continue to reap the benefits. We won’t always have the right answer, however, I assure you if something isn’t working I will be the first to admit it and will be willing to make appropriate changes. A great example of this is the World Series. While it worked great at the National Finals, with almost 700 teams entering and competing, it didn’t serve the original purpose of creating a big carrot with excitement that contestants at the local level would compete for, giving more participation for our producers shows.
Two things that I heard were: First, it was too confusing and secondly, at the end of the day contestants are tired, their horses are tired and they cannot ride nine more times in another class. These are both legitimate concerns and good reasons for the lack of participation. I have also heard loud and clear that contestants want RSNC to focus more on the State and National prizes with higher quality awards. Since such a large sum of money was channeled to the World Series, the feedback from the majority of the producers is to forgo that program and refocus on more quality prizes in the State and National Finals. Therefore, as we speak, the prize-line for the State Finals is being selected and will be announced in the next issue. I assure you that you will want to be a winner!

The reward for your involvement with RSNC is not only what has been mentioned above, but will continue to get even better if the lines of positive communication stay open and we all stick together so we can ride for sponsored prizes and not just with each other trading our hard earned money. If you ride for the brand, the brand will continue to work hard for you.
Sincerely,
Dave Wolfe President RSNC
