Royal Bank of Scotland appoints three new directors to its Reading office
Robin Barnes, regional director – Solent & Thames Valley Corporate is pleased to announce the following appointments in to his Reading corporate office
Paul Williams, head of the mid-corporate team is building the team from strength to strength with the appointments of Gareth Evans and Azfar Rizvi as relationship directors and Alex Wolahan who joins as business development director. The new team members complement the existing team and long-standing relationship director, Claire Moore.
Evans has spent the majority of his career within RBS invoice finance, where he held both relationship and business development roles. He has significant experience of asset-based lending, export funding and complex group structures. As a relationship director, he will now manage a portfolio of businesses in a broad variety of sectors.
Rizvi joins RBS from National Australia Group (Europe), where he worked in the corporate and structured team focusing on private equity led transactions. Rizvi gained an MSc in finance and management from Cranfield School of Management and is a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers (AMCT).
Alex Wolahan has spent 10 years working in Irish banking, most recently as a relationship director focusing on the UK hotel and leisure sector. Having taken up the role of business development director with RBS, Wolahan will specialise in mid-corporate business across a variety of sectors, working predominantly with non-RBS Group banked clients.
The mid-corporate team advises companies with a turnover in the range £25 million-£100m across the full range of corporate finance, invoice finance, asset finance, trade finance and wealth management requirements.
Commenting on the appointments, Paul Williams, head of mid-corporate banking, Thames Valley region, said: “We are pleased to welcome Gareth, Azfar and Alex to the team. Mid-corporates is one of the key business sectors propelling the UK’s economy and these appointments are proof that we are very much open for business.”
To drive forward in the large corporate space, Gareth Thompson has been appointed as head of the large corporate team.
Thompson has worked with RBS since 2001, most recently as director, services team, UK sector coverage. In this role he gained eight years’ experience within the support and IT services sectors, managing relationships with businesses ranging from FTSE 250 firms to privately owned enterprises. Thompson has supported clients with acquisition finance, asset based lending, debt and equity capital markets and domestic and global cash management.
The large corporate team works with businesses with an annual turnover in excess of £100m, and Thompson will join existing relationship director, Stephen Davison.

Davison joined RBS in 2008 as relationship director in mid-corporate banking, following similar roles held within other corporate banks. Davison has spent the past two years driving business development forward in the large corporate space and has been instrumental in successfully expanding the large corporates customer base resulting in the creation of a second relationship director role which he has now taken on.
