conferencing/hospitality 13 The green venue in the heart of the countryside

Greenlands Conferences and Events at Henley is fortunate to be situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, a fact that makes it determined to do all it can to minimise the effects the business has on the environment. Staff at Greenlands have formed an Environmental Action Group, which continually reviews and improves the environmental credentials, measures energy and waste consumption and reports on a monthly basis. Greenlands also appoints external consultants to carry out regular audits of its operations which include environmental benchmarking.

The design of its conference and meeting rooms provide comfortable and well-equipped work areas, whilst at the same time moving towards fully sustainable operations. All rooms have excellent natural light sources to minimise the requirement for artificial light. Electronic equipment is upgraded

to the highest environmental performance standards and computer equipment is either EPEAT gold or silver star items. Greenlands also uses maximum levels of recycled and recyclable materials for non- mechanicals in each room.

The ethos of high-quality, highly sustainable, carries across into all areas of the business, encompassing the household management processes, dining and refreshments and day-to-day running of the business. There is an ongoing supply chain review in place, to establish suppliers environmental credentials and its kitchens use local seasonal produce wherever possible to create menus that celebrate seasonality, fresh and sustainably farmed local produce. It only uses Fairtrade coffee and beverages.

All heating boilers are fuelled by Kerosene instead of gas oil – a cleaner, more efficient and cheaper fuel and Greenlands has a dedicated

hot water boiler for summer use which is cheaper and more efficient than running normal boilers.

Taking care of its grounds and gardens is also a high priority. It is situated in an unique riverside environment, and its policy is to work to conserve these natural habitats and create additional areas of wildlife value wherever possible. Its latest venture is a pollination project providing bee hotels for egg laying and encouraging insect activity with natural wildflower and meadow areas.

Greenlands extends its sustainability policy into all areas of the business including internal and external marketing, making concerted efforts to reduce paper usage throughout the business and producing digital brochures and web-based materials to replace previously paper-based products. It uses its websites to encourage customers to read materials online rather than printing

and where it is still required to produce printed materials, these are designed and produced in a carbon neutral environment and printed on FSC certified stock.

Greenlands has achieved a number of accreditations for its sustainability programmes including; EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, EN ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems, International Association of Conference Centres Green Star Accreditation Platinum Tier and the Green Tourism Gold Award.
