GOLF: SPAIN VS FLORIDA

La Manga MURCIA, SPAIN 84 | aplaceinthesun.com

ust 25km from Murcia airport, so 2½ hours from the UK on a variety of budget airlines, this well-established resort has three good 18-hole courses, the 5-star Hotel Príncipe Felipe, 20 restaurants and bars, a 28-court tennis centre, cricket and football facilities, and a fi ne sailing set-up. Sporting amenities for children are terrifi c, and reassuringly the resort also has banks, supermarkets, shops, a medical centre and a dentist on-site.

Unlike some of the newer developments locally, which have seen signifi cant price falls over the past few years, La Manga has a 40-year track record of quietly developing a range of property. Its location is a big plus — you can easily get down for a long weekend, unlike Florida. T ere’s an active rental scheme for owners who can predict their dates, but, for many, half the pleasure of Spain is being able to use their holiday home whenever they want.

What can you buy there?

A two-bedroom fully furnished Bellaluz apartment, with a terrace and views of the Mar Menor sea lagoon, is currently on the market for £195,000.

A three-bed semi-detached El Rancho townhouse, close to one of nine swimming pools, costs £200,000. And a grand four- bedroom Los Naranjos villa, with an open-plan design and a decent-sized garden, close to the tennis centre, is on at £440,000. Las Mimosas is the new phase at La Manga. Attractive four- bedroom high-spec villas are planned, starting at £395,000 or so. T ey look great, but buying off -plan in Spain isn’t everyone’s favourite option just now.
