THE PERFECT FIT
An Italian consortium of organic producers and farmers has chosen compostable NatureFlex from Innovia Films to wrap its range of Fair Trade chocolate. Alce Nero, part of Alce Nero Mielizia SpA, and its members share a common ethos for regionality, innovation and the environment. The choice to farm organically has characterised the organisation since its inception in 1978. Today the company represents farmers, beekeepers and Fair Trade producers, all members of the company. Marketing manager Nicoletta Maffini said: “Metallised NatureFlex from Innovia Films was a perfect fit for us due not only to its environmental attributes but also its excellent barrier properties to keep our organic Fair Trade chocolate in premium condition.”

Contract packer Mintons Good Food, based in Powys, has installed a combined weigher and bagging machine from Italian manufacturer PFM Packaging Machinery to handle a range of snack products in bags of 25-100g. The ZC2 machine was bought, says Mintons’ managing director Roger Watkins, to improve presentation of the stand-up four-side-seal
packs produced for a number of major brands as well as well as Mintons’ own range of Hungry Dragon savory snacks. The ZC2 is a combination of the PFM ten-head C2 weigher mounted directly on the PFM Zenith entry-level bagging machine. With no gantry, floor space requirements are reduced and drop height shortened, which reduces risk of product breakage.

Redpack Packaging Machinery has supplied an HTS flow-wrapping machine to a client near Dundee for packing collations of herbs. Loose or bunched- basil, parsley, coriander, sage, tarragon, dill, mint, etc are operator-fed to marked product positions on a dished infeed conveyor belt. The machine pauses while the infeed positions are being filled and then automatically feeds the loaded herbs into the wrapping module. When required by production, the wrapping sequence can be switched to continuous wrapping with machine speed range of between 20-100ppm. For flat pack presentation the product outfeed is fitted with a rotary air excluder that is synchronised to product flow.

The Eikemeier Corrugated group has chosen the Signode GCU 2500 compression strapper to help satisfy increasing customer demands for excellent delivered quality of its products. Eikemeier Corrugated offers its customers practically all types of corrugated board and complete packaging solutions from a single source. Earlier in 2011, the group looked at ways to improve product protection and appearance while reducing costs at its Lucka plant in Germany. Plant managers identified the end-of-line pallet compression and strapping process as one area where improvements could be made. Signode reviewed the issues with Eikemeier Corrugated and proposed the GCU2500 compression strapping station equipped with automatic top edge-protection applicator units. The GCU automatically applies 800 x 300 corrugated strips to the top edges of the load to prevent product damage during the strapping cycle.

THE MISSING LINX
SCOTTISH bacon supplier Quality Foods of Aberdeen has installed a Linx IJ355 high definition case coder after being impressed with the machine’s reliability and performance. Low cost of ownership and clear printing were among the other factors that led the company to choose the latest machine from coding and marking specialist Linx Printing Technologies. The Linx IJ355’s robust construction is ideal for Quality Foods, where packs of bacon are packed by hand into brown cardboard boxes, which then go via conveyor past the printer. Information including the product name, pack size, product code and best before date is coded onto one side of each box, with prints measuring 205x40mm and 183x45mm. The machine codes 2.8 boxes/min with the line operating 50 hours per week, all year round.

Success brings its own rewards but it can also bring problems as manufacturer of cereal bars, Devonvale discovered. Having installed a compact metal detector from S+S Inspection on the first packing line seven years ago, managing director Keith Upham was impressed by the reliability of the system which had suffered only one fault and needed only one belt replacement since being installed. Even so, he looked at all the systems available on the UK market but all, except the S+S ECOLINE D, were too long to fit in the available space. The S+S system is unusual in that it requires an exceptionally small metal free zone and is only 750 mm long making it ideal for Devonvale’s new packing line.

INDUSTRY UNWRAPPED << PRINT AND APPLY
Somerset cider-maker Magners has automated pallet labelling operations at its Shepton Mallet factory with two print and apply machines from Logopak. The Logopak 815PF units replace a manual labelling operation, reducing labour costs and ensuring accurate positioning for adjacent side labelling. They also scan each bar code label as it is applied, automatically reprinting and re-applying should there be a failure to read correctly. Both machines receive label data from an existing factory management system via Logopak’s new Synchro-LXS software. This holds and manages labelling data files on a PC for real-time data flow to the labeller, independent of the host computer from which the data is initially downloaded.
