O-I Europe Bouts-up for 2013 growth

GLASS packaging manufacturer O-I Europe has started 2013 with a new man at the helm of the multi-national business.

New president Erik Bouts takes

over from his predecessor Jose Lorente who leaves the company after 34-years.

As the leader of O-I’s largest re-

gion, Bouts is charged with accel- erating efforts to strengthen its leading market position in Europe by improving quality, sustainabil- ity and its ability to better support the growing need of European customers for more sustainable and healthy glass packaging solu- tions.

Over the course of 2013 the firm plans to invest around £107m in its European facilities. “Erik’s experience in leading major manufacturing companies and his strong focus on execu- tion and results will be invaluable on our journey to strengthen our competitiveness in Europe,” said Al Stroucken, O-I chairman and chief executive officer.

“He comes to O-I with a strong record of successfully rallying organisations around new ideas and

strategies, while building

strong relationships with custom- ers, business partners and the

workforce.” Bouts was formerly CEO of The Glidden Company, part of Akzo- Nobel Architectural Paints Divi- sion in the USA.

He holds a masters degree in business administration and economics from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands. O-I’s European business, head- quartered in Lausanne Switzer- land, comprises 8,000 employ- ees in 11 different countries, representing approximately 40% of the company’s global sales.

ILAPAK’S EYECATCHING POUCH PACKS ARE THE FIRST CHOICE FOR GRANGE PACKAGING

Leading contract packer, Grange Packaging

and Distribution, is producing high quality pouch packs for Kellogg’s and Fox’s Biscuits, using Ilapak’s Vegatronic 4000 continuous film motion, VFFS (vertical, form, fill and seal) packaging machines. The high speed machines are producing snack packs for Fox’s Rocky packs and Kellogg’s cereals.

Grange first installed an Ilapak Vegatronic 4000 machine three years ago, producing pouch packs, since then demand for the eye-catching, stand-up packs has risen

significantly, prompting Grange to install a further Vegatronic machine to meet growing demand.

The attractive, free-standing packs produced by the Vegatronic achieve excellent on-shelf product differentiation and are fitted with Euro holes so they can be presented on a hanging point-of-sale display for effective merchandising. The packs are also popular with consumers as they are easy to open.

As well as producing attractive, high quality packs, the Vegatronic 4000 is capable of high speeds – Grange is producing up to 55 packs a minute – thanks to its continuous film motion design.

The Vegatronic uses a continuous film motion to form a bag from a single reel of wrapping material, unwound at a constant speed while filling and sealing the bag simultaneously. To ensure high seal quality, the Vegatronic uses Loadcell technology to ensure accurate film tracking.

In addition, the Vegatronic’s motorised horizontal sealing jaws cushion the products’ drop, making it ideal for handling biscuits and other delicate snack food products.

Another important benefit is the Vegatronic’s open-frame design, which makes it easy to clean and maintain, helping manufacturers meet the stringent regulations of the food industry.
