New layout leads customers straight up the garden path

Haskins Garden Centre group has seen a profit on its £31 million turnover and observed that relatively simple changes, which can often be overlooked, can make a notable difference to sales.

... several departments have enjoyed a sales boost of between 12% and 63%

A new wide pathway at the well- established Ferndown centre has resulted in several departments – including garden sundries, books, gifts and clothing – enjoying a sales boost of between 12% and 63%.

Julian Winfield, chief executive of the family-owned business, said: “Since buying director Conna Powles joined us a year ago we have improved the range of stock across the departments, but her suggestion to entice more people to explore the centre after leaving the restaurant, by creating the

wider, straight pathway, has made a big difference. The positive effect of the change has been proved by the figures.“

Powles added that it would have been easy to have left the layout as it was since the centre was built in 1994: “It was

a lot of extra work, but now the floorplan change has enabled the departments to become more enticing. People generally do not like change, but the staff at Ferndown have received compliments following their hard work. Customers now go with the new flow.“
