• Paul Hopper has been promoted from senior tax manager to local tax director in the Wilkins Kennedy Winchester office. Hopper heads up the personal tax team in Winchester and looks after a varied portfolio of clients in Hampshire, London and the south coast including high-net-worth individuals. Day to day, Hopper advises clients on capital gains tax, inheritance tax and bespoke tax planning opportunities. He says: “The appetite for professional tax advice has never been greater than in these challenging times.“


• National law firm Clarke Willmott has strengthened its Southampton team with three appointments in the region. Matthew Irvine (left) joins as an associate in the employment team from Trethowans and brings a wealth of experience in employment litigation. Paul Hinnett (right) joins as a senior associate in the commercial property and development team from Shoosmiths. He has nine years’ experience advising national and local developers, land owners and banks. The firm’s private client team has also been bolstered with the appointment of Jessica Connelly as a court of protection solicitor, working in both the Southampton and Bristol offices. She joins from Swain & Co.


• Shoosmiths has announced two promotions at its Southampton office. Employment specialist Stuart Lawrenson (above) has been moved up to partner while commercial specialist Ewan Drummond has been promoted to senior associate. They are joined in the national law firm’s 2013 round by 15 new senior associates and five new partners – 22 promotions in total, all of which take effect from this month.


• Mandy Payne has taken over as president at the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce (BCTC), replacing Nigel Hedges who has stepped down after five years. Hedges, who will continue to act as the chairman of the Town Centre Management Board and maintain close links with BCTC, has been a passionate ambassador for the organisation, which has grown under his presidency. Payne has been BCTC vice president for the past two years. Her key mission is to ensure membership has access to quality business support and training opportunities, working with the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, the Dorset Volunteer Mentors project and funding bodies such as the UKTI.


• A regional expert in the haulage and aggregate industries has joined an expanding waste management specialist in the south. Steve Grant has been appointed commercial manager at the TJ Group, which covers Hampshire, Dorset, Sussex and Surrey. The post is a new one for the haulage and workplace recycling firm which is headquartered at Charity Farm at Wickham, near Fareham, employs 110 staff and operates a fleet of 70 branded vehicles.

• Pulse Cashflow Finance, the invoice finance and outsourced credit management specialist, has appointed Martyn Price, a seasoned corporate financier, as sales manager. Price brings a wealth of experience in corporate finance to the company in addition to a growing introducer base. In his new role, he is set to build on these solid foundations across new territories. Price has worked in banking and finance for more than 15 years. He has in-depth knowledge of asset-based lending and has spent the past eight years generating leads and structuring deals for fast- growth companies. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as a regional sales manager for Aldermore Invoice Finance and as a senior broker for a commercial finance brokerage.


• The directors of CW Fellowes have promoted Lee Beaumont to director. Beaumont, who specialises in assisting small and medium- sized privately-owned enterprises with strategic planning and accounting advice, joined the firm in April 2010. Adam Wilson, CW Fellowes managing director, said: “I am absolutely delighted for Lee. His hard- working ethic, enthusiasm and determination have proven to be great assets to the firm, and he has been instrumental in the continued growth of our business services group. He is a credit to CW Fellowes and I look forward to continuing to work with him.“


• Leading academic in Web and Internet Science at the University of Southampton, Tim Berners-Lee, is one of five joint winners of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. The prize, given by The Royal Academy of Engineering, honours him for inventing the World Wide Web and is awarded in recognition of ’outstanding advances in engineering that have changed the world and benefited humanity’. Berners-Lee won the award jointly with Marc Andreessen, who was honoured for his work in inventing the Mosaic browser, and Vinton Cerf, Robert Kahn and Louis Pouzin, who were honoured for their work in developing the Internet. The award will be presented by HM the Queen in the summer.
