HOW TO FUND YOUR LLM


For many students the problem of funding an LLM abroad is a big challenge. Studying a postgraduate law degree for one or two years can be extremely difficult and often off putting for many potential students. However, there are a number of options which are definitely worth looking into. There are loans and grants available and there is also the possibility of employment.


Grants & Scholarships


Governments and private foundations offer grants and scholarships to certain selected students. Merit based LLM grants and scholarships are invariably highly competitive. The Fulbright Commission offer this for US based LLM’s. This is notoriously difficult achieve but definitely worth trying for would be students who fulfil the criteria. There are also grants which are offered to students of a particular religion, nationality


Law Schools


Law schools also provide a number of grants which are usually based on academic excellence and achievement. Financial aid offices at law schools will be able to provide you with specific details. For example: the LLM.LPC Scholarship Scheme run by the University of Law, offered one full scholarship and one award of £4,000 for the LLM. LPC commencing in autumn 2013


University finance offices will be able to provide you with a useful


resource and may be able to tell you about more obscure grant and scholarship opportunities.


Loans


LLM students often need to take out loans to finance their studies and living expenses. There are a number of banks who offer student loans and there are ones which offer loans to international students. You need to be fully aware of the interest rates applied to any loan, its terms and conditions and how you will repay the loan.
