STUDY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Studying abroad in South Africa is a chance to experience life in one of the most diverse and complex countries in the world, while also gaining a degree from an internationally ranked university.

Since the 1990s, when racial segregation was removed from the country’s laws, South Africa has made significant progress in developing a more democratic society.

But the effects of apartheid linger on, and there are still many problems to be addressed, including high rates of violent crime, poverty and HIV/AIDS infection.

However, higher education is one area where South Africa already excels, and that looks set to continue.

As well as having a number of world- class universities, South Africa also offers students the prospect of studying in some of Africa’s most exciting and diverse cities, exploring incredible wildlife reserves, and experiencing at first hand this unique culture in which sharing, sports and the great outdoors are all essential components.

South Africa has a strong presence in the 2012/13 QS World University Rankings, with the University of Cape Town (UCT), and University of the Witwatersrand both featuring high-up.

giraffe and many more

• More than 700 public nature reserves, including 19 national parks, and about 200 private reserves

• Area of 1.22 million sq km;

Visitors to the country can choose from a huge range of activities, including mountain trekking, shark cage diving, savannah safaris, vineyard tours, whale watching, horse riding – and perhaps after all that, a nice relaxing braai (barbecue).

Most major cities have lively nightlife scenes, and South Africans are also known for their passion for sports (both playing and watching), especially football (soccer), cricket and rugby union.

If you’re keen to get to know South Africa beyond the campus boundaries, many universities have community volunteering schemes, which provide opportunities to get involved in the development of local communities.

With eleven official languages, multilingualism is a way of life in South Africa. English is spoken by most people in urban areas, but anyone spending time in the country is likely to pick up phrases from a number of languages.

Lifestyle

Unsurprisingly for a country with a subtropical climate and such fantastic natural scenery, South Africa has developed a culture largely based around enjoying the great outdoors.

Cape Town - South Africa

a vibrant multicultural metropolis. In 2014, Cape Town will take on the title of World Design Capital, in recognition of its blend of “heritage, innovation, diversity and creative talent”.

There are some interesting buildings, old and new, but Cape Town’s most striking features are natural: Table Mountain, which provides a dramatic backdrop to the city, and Cape Point, the rugged ridge that forms the south-western tip of the African continent.

The region also offers beaches,

surfing, wildlife reserves and vineyards, as well as plenty of cultural opportunities, particularly for music lovers.

The University of Cape Town, South Africa’s highest ranked university, is located in the heart of the city. Just outside, in the Bellville suburb, is the University of the Western Cape. Slightly further inland again is Stellenbosch University, about 20km from the city centre.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology also has a campus in Cape Town, as well as sites in Belville, Wellington, Granger Bay and Mowbray.
