A fashion fit-out

Portview has completed a fit out for designer clothing brand Oscar de la Renta in Mayfair, London. Designed by Meyer Davis in New York, the 300 square metre store, which opened its doors in January, is the designer’s first standalone store in London, on the corner of Mayfair’s famous Mount Street and Berkeley Square. Portview was selected for the project after working with designers Meyer Davis on Oscar de la Renta’s store in Harrods. They were so impressed with the work, they asked Portview to complete the £1.2m fit out of their first standalone store in London. Portview

Rail Grandeur

The Great Northern Hotel has re-opened for the first time in almost 12 years following a comprehensive £40 million renovation programme. Originally designed by architect Lewis Cubitt, the Great Northern Hotel opened in 1854 as the first of the new generation of Victorian railway hotels. Its Italianate, classical features are textbook examples of the early Victorian period. David Archer and Julie Ann Humphryes, co-founders of Archer Humphryes Architects, were commissioned to execute the concept and interior design of the hotel. Reflecting its architectural heritage, the 91-bedroom hotel has been sensitively refurbished and its interior design exudes a timeless elegance with a hint of modernity.

RWD

appoints new

director

The partners of Redman Whiteley Dixon have recently welcomed Johnny Vickers, who re-joins the team in his

new role as a director. A long- time colleague and friend, Johnny will become a partner in developing the successful British superyacht design studio. Johnny started his career in yacht design with RWD 12 years ago. Following a very successful six years with the studio helping to launch several award winning yachts, including Twizzle and Al Said, Johnny left to embark upon new

challenges in London. There, he was charged with setting up the yacht design department of the luxury residential designers Candy and Candy. Following the completion of the designs for a highly successful 61m motor yacht, Johnny moved to work as a senior designer of leading yacht design firm Terence Disdale Design. Johnny’s considerable knowledge and experience in

recommended the client worked with architects, rpa:vision, and M&E contractors, Foreman Roberts. They managed everything from strengthening the building’s structure and refurbishing the staircase to the lighting, utilities and telephones. The store’s furniture was designed in New York, but had never been made before; and so once the manufacturing drawings had been completed it had to be manufactured in its entirety and installed by Portview. Its location on the busy corner of Mount Street and Berkeley Square also presented its own challenges, as deliveries had to be coordinated carefully and the team had to contend with restricted working hours.

Cherkerdijian set up her studio in 2001, which organically evolved from a conceptual think-tank to a production-oriented entity, focusing on the making of furniture and everyday objects. Despite the challenges Cherkerdijian has faced, the designer has overcome these obstacles by re-thinking her approach to design. ‘Designing the Middle East: Part 2’ explores how these challenges have resulted in new ways of creating and making through a process of trial and error. The exhibition continues the

international stable of designers who have exhibited at 19 Greek Street since it opened to acclaim in September 2012. Alongside this exhibition will be two floors of vintage and re- editioned pieces by Espasso, the brazilian design specialists, which houses its European outpost on Greek Street.

high-level luxury design, from furniture to private aircraft, as well as in-depth knowledge of the design for some of the largest yacht launches of recent times, will enable him to build on the new and exciting projects that RWD currently have on their drawing boards. Johnny will be engaged with the rest of the team in providing the highest level of design experience for RWD’s clients.
