ART AND SCIENCE COLLIDE This year’s BIID Conference explores the impact of new technology on interior design


The British Institute of Interior Design is preparing for its inspirational annual conference, “Design Invention: Art and Science Collide” which takes place at RIBA’s London HQ, Portland Place, London, on Thursday 27th June 2013.

Sue Timney commented, “Our industry is constantly evolving... as designers, we are influenced and inspired by a range of disciplines. The 2013 conference will explore fresh thinking in approaches, techniques and materials and how they impact on the changing creative landscape of interior design. Our audience will learn and draw inspiration from the experiences of global experts and practitioners. We encourage all designers to mark this date in their diaries now.” Joining Jason Bruges and Ab Rogers in the conference programme will be acclaimed interior design experts, Penny Sparke, Helen Storey, Sue Timney and Daniel Charny, who will be taking part in a thought-provoking panel debate which will explore ‘Is Craftsmanship Compatible with New Technology?’ Penny Sparke is Pro-Vice Chancellor at Kingston University, a Professor of Design History and a Director of the Modern Interiors


Research Centre. Penny will be sharing her knowledge on how interior design has merged with science throughout the ages.


Professor Helen Storey MBE, is Professor of Fashion Science at the University of the Arts, London and Co-Director of The Helen Storey Foundation. With a keen interest in science, Storey has also worked on a series of projects exploring the fields of biology, neuroscience and chemistry.


Daniel Charny is an


independent curator and co- founder of creative projects consultancy From Now On. Working across cultural, education and commercial environments, Charny is recognised for his distinctive combination of strategic and creative thinking. His latest exhibition for the Victoria and Albert Museum “Power of Making” was a critical and popular success, becoming the most visited free exhibition ever staged at the V&A. The conference will also include the presentation of this year’s BIID Honorary Fellowships, which will see world-renowned designers Thomas Heatherwick, James Dyson and Deyan Sudjic all recognised for their exceptional contributions to the industry. 
