line was a six stride, and we did not ride up to it the way we wanted to. I added, and she says, ‘Okay, whatever you need. We’re going to the other side. That’s all I know.’ It was a six to a two, and the six we ended up adding to seven, but she got out of the two without any problem. She has plenty of talent. She does her very best to jump the jumps clean.” At the 2012 show at HITS Thermal, Annie earned two

blues, with Karen in Level 1 and Conner Hinckley in Level 2. Conner, from Washington, was one of Julie’s interns at the time. In 2013 at Desert Circuit Week III, Annie brought home two blue ribbons in the Level 1 Jumpers (.95 m). With Karen, they were first of 30 entries, and Conner showed the mare to a first in a class of 61. Annie also showed in the Low Adult Jumpers, with heights at one meter. “She’s been doing well. I’m really proud of her,” says

Karen, beaming. “She did great,” adds Julie. “She is a great horse, and she continues to get better and better.” Karen admires Julie’s stallion Osilvis, who like Annie, has the damsire Nimmerdor. “Julie has produced amazing babies from him. From what I’ve seen of Oso and of Annie, I’m impressed. They have really solid brains.” (It’s interesting to note that another 10-year-old Indoctro x Nimmerdor jumper, White Sox, was in the WEF Sport Horse Auction in March 2013. An amateur rider purchased him for $105,000.) Annie could yet have a career as a broodmare—

mares with a single ovary can still conceive. “I might breed her,” says Karen. “She’s such a special horse, so it’s a possibility, but not any time soon.” Annie does have one addiction—rolling, sometimes

at very inopportune moments. “If I don’t get my saddle off fast enough, she will roll on it. I took her to her stall one time, still bridled and saddled, and turned to talk to somebody. When I turned back, it couldn’t have been a minute or two, but she was on the ground. ‘Wait!’ I hollered. She managed to not roll on the saddle that time.” Today Karen remains Annie’s proud owner and, more

importantly, her devoted rider and partner. “She’s the best,” Karen says. “It’s so hard to put into words. Anything is possible with her. She’s got so much scope and talent.” The mare who was labeled an unrideable rogue and the rider who wasn’t sure she could ever tackle training a young horse have overcome all the hurdles—together.

When your horse feels good you feel it too!

“I put Back on Track blankets on my horses as much as possible. It really keeps their bodies supple and loose. I can feel the difference right from the beginning of the warm-up. When their bodies feel good, they are happy and ready to do the work.”
