country. Meet Liz Halliday who takes the term “adrenaline junkie” to a whole different level. One day she climbs aboard one of her many talented event horses and the next she climbs behind the wheel of a racecar as a professional driver. Growing up in southern California, she


M


moved to England 13 years ago to spend a year working for world-renowned eventer William Fox-Pitt. Her short stay abroad mushroomed into 13 years; today she has a string of talented competition horses and a thriving business in southern England. It was her father Don, an avid car enthusiast, who


introduced her to the thrill of driving fast. He survived a long degenerative illness to watch his daughter compete in many tough races, including a win at the 12 Hours of Sebring and a fourth place finish at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours, before passing away at the end of last year. Now she drives in memory of her father and rides for her own future.

England is well-known as the “mecca” of eventing and Liz feels it has been hugely beneficial to her as a rider to spend time training and competing in the U.K. and Europe. “There are a huge number of events in such a small space. The whole country is about the length of California—and I might have had 12 people in a class back home. But in

England there’s a whole day dedicated to one level and five different classes at that level. If


you’re winning in England I think you’ve got a better shot at the future.”


She also notes that a number of selection trials for U.S.


teams are held in Europe, where American event riders include 2012 Olympic team member Tiana Coudray, Jules Stiller and Clark Montgomery, all current members of the USEF High Performance Training Group. “I’m hoping that being here will set me up for the


future. I’ve said to myself I won’t return to the U.S. until I’ve achieved everything I can over here. I’d really like to do
