Stan steps in to help
Safety for boy with new fire sprinklers
A SEVERELY disabled boy from Redruth will now be safer in his home after a local businessman stepped in to fit free sprinklers in the property. The nature of 12-year-old Ma- son Blight’s disabilities means he lives on the ground floor of his home as he is unsafe on the stairs. Since his bedroom is next to the kitchen – the room most likely in any house for fire to break out – the Blight family were put in touch with Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) for further advice. ‘As Mason is unable to use the stairs safely, we provided a grant to make adaptations to the home to enable him to live on the ground floor,’ said Lynette Segers, from the Council’s Dis- abled Children’s and Therapy Service.
‘Fire safety advice was needed to increase Mason’s safety in the event of a fire and so I referred the family to Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.’
As a result, fire officers car- ried out a Home Fire Safety Check at the property, to ensure smoke detectors were in the most suitable location and give specific fire safety advice. ‘Following our visit to the
family, we resolved to do all we could to help make sure Mason
could stay safe,’ said area man- ager Kevin Thomas from Corn- wall Fire and Rescue Service. ‘A sprinkler system would give the best level of protection, so we got in touch with Stan Barber at Mandara Sprinklers, who very kindly agreed to pro- vide a sprinkler system free of charge. ‘We have worked with Corn- wall Fire and Rescue Service for many years to promote the ben- efits of sprinkler systems,’ said Stan.

‘A sprinkler system is de- signed to save lives. Sprinklers are positioned to activate quickly and each head is a self- contained unit operated purely by heat. In the event of a fire the heat will activate the nearest sprinkler head and within min- utes the fire is under control. In most cases fires are extin- guished by one sprinkler head. ‘The sprinkler system has given us peace of mind,’ said Mason’s dad Jon.
‘Mason wouldn’t understand what to do if the fire alarm went off and so this extra protection is a great relief. ‘We are very grateful to Stan for his very kind donation,’ added mum Bev.

‘He did an excellent job fitting the sprinklers – they are very discreet and you wouldn’t know they were there. ‘This is a marvellous example of how sprinklers can be fitted into a house with minimum dis- ruption,’ said cllr Judith Hay- cock, chairman of Cornwall Council’s Communities
Overview and Scrutiny Com- mittee.
‘The scrutiny committee has been working with Cornwall Council’s planning service to encourage more developers to fit sprinklers in new properties and correct some of the myths about sprinkler systems.’ ‘This is a good example of how
Roadworks under way
WORKS to improve two key road junctions in the Camborne, Pool, Redruth area are due to be completed by May 31, 2013. The £1.1m project will see significant im- provements carried out at both the Avers and Treswithian junctions. The project, a legacy project of Camborne Pool Redruth Regenera- tion, will provide suffi- cient capacity at these junctions to prevent congestion from in- creased levels of traffic due to regeneration. The junctions will enable the delivery of the planned 4,000 new homes within the area up to 2030; but will also provide the capacity for up to 6,000 new jobs and 6,000 new homes in the longer term, which ensures important in- frastructure is deliv- ered before the growth comes forward.
Funding for the works, which will be carried out by COR- MAC Contracting, is coming from a range of partners, including £649,843 from the Euro- pean Regional Develop- ment Fund.
The balance will come from the £6.7m Housing Growth Point fund which was awarded to the council by the Government to support schemes to stimulate the supply of open market and af- fordable housing in sustainable locations in Truro, St Austell, Newquay, Camborne- Pool-Redruth and Fal- mouth/Penryn.
The scheme will see a
range of improvements carried out at both junctions.
The works planned at
Treswithian and Avers include: ● Widening and re- alignment of the car- riageway to accommo- date the improved road layout ● Removal of right turn facility at the junction of the A30 Westbound off slip road and the A3047 side road
