Invited guests attend dinner


CAMBORNE Redruth and District Lions Club has celebrated its 37th birthday with a charter dinner held at the Penventon Hotel, Redruth.


Southwest Lions Clubs were repre- sented in the 61-strong guest list welcomed by club president Paul Bray. After dinner en- tertainment was a cabaret by Pete Cara- dine.


Special guests in- cluded past district governor Dave Rosson and his wife Jenny and the guest speaker Alan Buckley of the Corn- wall Miners Associa- tion, and his wife So- nia.


Lion president Paul Bray said that, to date, they had had a good year with in excess of £5,460 funds raised and £7,400 donated to vari- ous good causes.

Benefit cheat guilty


A WOMAN from Cam- borne has been given a Community Order to in- clude a 12-week curfew af- ter she admitted housing benefit, council tax bene- fit and income support fraud totalling £6,985.27. Rachael Belcher, 24,


of


Penrose Court, Tolvaddon pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates’ Court to three counts of benefit fraud after failing to promptly report to both Cornwall Council and the Department of Work and Pensions that her partner had moved in with her. After hearing the facts of the case the bench re- quested a report from the probation service.


Curfew


On returning and hear- ing the probation report the bench sentenced Belcher to a community order of a 12-week curfew Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8am-noon.


Belcher was also or- dered to pay £200 towards the investigation and le- gal costs.


The overpaid benefits are being recovered from Belcher by both Cornwall Council and the Depart- ment of Work and Pen- sions separately from this court action.
