From runner to Idol producer


IN conversation with American Idol judge, Nicki Minaj


A FORMER Camborne student has carved out a name for himself in the capital of the world of showbiz, Hollywood. Daniel Norris, now 30, moved to Camborne from Guildford in Sur- rey when he was eight years old and was a stu-


dent at Pool Academy before moving on to study the BTEC Na- tional Diploma in Me- dia Production at Corn- wall College.


Speaking of the course, Daniel said: ‘I really enjoyed studying the BTEC National Diploma in Media Pro- duction and, in particu- lar, the variety of disci- plines that were touched upon and the practical nature of each.’


After the course Daniel, like plenty of qualified young people, applied for jobs and any opportunity to gain experience.


Daniel said: ‘After writing hundreds of let- ters to various produc- tion companies I finally managed to secure my- self work experience with the pop-culture programme – The Big Breakfast – on Channel


4. I worked really hard and eventually was of- fered a full-time con- tract with them as a runner.


‘The job was great but not glamorous at all, having to be in work for 3am to pre- pare the studio for film- ing, hand out scripts and place props in their correct places.’


Promotion


When The Big Break- fast ended in 2002, Daniel found himself working on various programmes including Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.


‘Being a runner was brilliant and is one of the most important jobs in the industry, I learned so much and ultimately it set me on the path to where I am today.’


While working on a programme for Sky 1


called Brainiac Science Abuse Daniel was pro- moted to junior re- searcher. He had been working closely with the producers of the show to try and bring their ideas to screen. After this Daniel got what he describes as his ‘big break’. ‘I was interviewed and thought there was no way I was going to get the job but I was of- fered the position of re- searcher on the biggest programme in the UK at the time – The X Fac- tor.


Daniel stayed with The X Factor for a few series before moving on to Britain’s Got Tal- ent and Britain’s Got More Talent.


During his time with The X Factor, Daniel worked his way up to associate producer and it was in 2012 his career took a bit of a Holly-


wood twist.


‘I started to work on Got to Dance and it was during filming of the second series that the opportunity to work in America came up. Pro- ducers I had worked with at The X Factor were now in Los Ange- les producing Amer- ica’s Got Talent and af- ter a few conversations with them I moved to LA in May 2011.’


This journey led Daniel to his current position as a producer on one of the most pop- ular TV programmes at the moment – Ameri- can Idol.


Daniel has used his experience to get him where he is today but it is what he learnt in ed- ucation that led him into his first work ex- perience post.


Daniel is now mar- ried and lives in Los Angeles.
