News Habitat help

THE Red River Valley Local Na- ture Reserve (LNR) near Cam- borne has a new group of friends who have taken on the task of looking after the areas of valuable natural habitat in the valley. Volunteers, including mem- bers of the Cornwall Dragonfly Group and Cornwall Butterfly Conservation, have come to- gether with the aim of carrying out much-needed conservation work in this important wildlife reserve which is owned by Cornwall Council and managed by CORMAC Solutions Ltd. Since the end of tin streaming during the last century, areas that were once bare ground and open water have gradually been returning to a more natural state and this means some habi- tats are disappearing. With the support of CORMAC Solutions, the Red River Res- cuers have already held a series of conservation days over the autumn and winter.

At Bell Lake Marsh a large area of scrub has been cleared to restore an area of wetland which is one of the best remain- ing dragonfly sites along the valley.

The marsh is home to breed- ing colonies of the nationally scarce Small Red Damselfly and Keeled Skimmer, but in the last 10 years it has lost its colony of the scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly and in the last 30 years a colony of Marsh Fritillary butterflies.

Mudslingers

Further assistance has come from first-year geography stu- dents from the University of Ex- eter at Tremough, who spent two muddy days removing silt and vegetation from the marsh to retain areas of open water which are critical to the dragon- flies’ survival.

The group has also been given a donation of hand tools and safety clothing by Western Power Distribution.

These tools will enable the volunteers to continue the work of controlling willow and other invasive plants.

Impressive

Steve Jones, one of the co- ordinators of the Red River Res- cuers, said: ‘It’s fantastic to see the positive impact that our vol- unteers have had on these hugely important wetland habi- tats at the very core of the Red River Valley LNR.’

Gavin Henderson, country- side officer for Cormac, added: ‘It’s impressive to see what can be achieved when people come together to help look after the local environment.

‘In less than six months the ef- forts of this newly-formed group have already resulted in the transformation of one of the most important wildlife habitats in the valley.’ For more about the Red River Rescuers look at www.redriver rescuers.weebly.com

EUNICE shares a few pasty-making tips with Carol Vorderman

Pasty queen Eunice shows how it’s done

A RETIRED flower arranger from Cornwall has proved she is the Westcountry’s un- doubted pasty queen – at the age of 92. Eunice Woolcock, from Cam- borne, has been making Cor- nish pasties since she was three years old.

Her cooking skills have led

to her winning pasty competi- tions over the years and now she has triumphed in the new television series, Food Glori- ous Food.

Eunice’s pasty was chosen as the best dish in a regional heat of the food contest and now goes forward to face judg- ing at a national level.

Eunice was delighted her culinary skills won the tele- vised heat which was pre- sented by Carol Vorderman, who herself lives in the West- country, near Portishead. The show aims to find the nation’s favourite dish which will then be sold by a super- market.
