Crowning glory
THE Redruth School under-12 rugby team’s first year in ac- tion saw them crowned Corn- wall champions!
It started with an unbeaten run of friendly matches, con- tinuing with reaching the fi- nal of the East Cornwall Tour- nament, and culminating in being crowned Cornwall Schools seven-a-side rugby champions after beating Truro School in the final. On March 14 the squad of 12 travelled to Pool Academy to take on 20 other schools from the county. The weather was dull but the boys’ rugby was blinding. In the group stages they brushed aside opposition from Helston, Bolitho,

Humphrey Davy and Richard Lander.
The crunch game in the group was against Richard Lander, but after winning this with ease, the boys knew they had a great chance of going on to win the tournament. After topping their group, they showed great composure and excellent finishing skills against Newquay Tretherras in the quarter final, and then Hayle School in the semi final. The final was a hard-fought contest against old foes Truro School: the boys were confi- dent but still had some doubts, as they had lost to Truro in the East Cornwall 13-a-side fi- nal.
At half time they led 14-0 with the excitement levels ris- ing. Truro hit back in the sec- ond half but the Redruth boys were just too clinical when they had the ball and saw off Truro’s late rally.
This was Redruth School’s first time of getting their name printed on the under 12 County 7s trophy since it was introduced in 1999. Mr Kennedy and Mr Prior were very proud of the boys – it was very pleasing as it was the first year of rugby for six of the 12-man squad.
Credit is due to Redruth Rugby Club and their coaches who are doing an excellent job in the community.

Washout at car wash
RNLI Beach Life- guards, together with colleagues from the St Ives lifeboat crew and
staff members, braved the weather to take part in a charity car wash at the Hayle Re-
tail Park. The annual event, held as part of the RNLI’s SOS Day fund-raising drive, this
year raised about £500 for the charity which, as Dickon Berriman, lifeguard manager for the Kerrier and Car- rick Districts ex- plained, was slightly down on previous years because of the terrible weather.
‘But the main aim of holding the event at this time of year, apart from raising money, is to remind people that our crews are out in all weathers,’ said Mr Ber- riman.
He added that the charity was grateful to everyone who took part.
