Carbonated soft drink can market grows in 2012

The Can Makers, the body representing the UK manufacturers of beverage cans, revealed that a total of 5,147 million carbonated soft drink (CSD) cans were shipped in 2012 - an increase of 0.6 per cent on shipments in 2011. This is a notable achievement given the Met Office reported 2012 was the wettest summer in 100 years. Total UK empty can shipments for 2012 reached 9,382 million cans, a decrease of less than 1 per cent (0.7 per cent) year on year. The unsettled economic conditions, in addition to the weather washing out a good number of outdoor summer events, affected the take-home beer market, with shipments of beer and cider cans down 2.2 per cent to 4,235 million.

According to Nielsen, cans are still the favoured pack choice for

CSDs with over 57 per cent of the total market. CSDs in cans are growing faster than the category as a whole. The 50cl can continues to enjoy the strongest growth (27 per cent), driven largely by the popular energy drinks category. Small size cans i.e. 15cl have grown by 12 per cent and 25cl cans by 24 per cent, while the 33cl can continues to deliver the highest unit sales in 2012. The most popular can multi- pack format for CSDs is eight packs, having overtaken single serves, whilst four packs have also enjoyed growth. In an otherwise flat cider market, positive growth of 1 per cent was achieved for cider in cans. Multi-packs continue to be the most popular way of selling beer and cider, with substantial growth in 10, 18 and 24 pack sizes.

Plantpack have developed a new sustainable coating for food packaging made from seaweed. Working as part of an EU research consortium, The Paint Research Association (PRA) have developed a food packaging coating product, called PlantPack, which can replace current packaging coatings based on

petrochemicals. PlantPack is an eco-friendly food packaging coating product made from seaweed extracts and starch. It can be applied to paper and cardboard as a spray. The scientists working on the project blended seaweed extracts with starch and starch derivatives (which have good flexibility and strength) so it could be applied to paper packaging.

Old milk bottles find use with Lancashire Police

A Lancashire glass printing company has found a new way to shift milk bottles as the demand for doorstep delivery dwindles - providing thousands of bottles to police riot squads. Seaways Services has supplied 50,000 milk bottles a year to a police training centre in Gravesend, Kent, for the past three years - where they are used to make petrol bombs for

riot squad training sessions. Steve Smith, who runs the sessions at the centre, said: "We use milk bottles pretty much on a daily basis, creating petrol bombs to make riot training more realistic. We throw them around the site to train officers to react to real life situations of that nature. We order 30,000 to 50,000 a year from Seaways and they provide a brilliant service."
