It is hoped that the local pilot projects, part of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Scotland programme, will encourage people to recycle more and limit the amount of used drinks containers going to landfill. Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment Richard Lochhead visited the IKEA in Edinburgh to see the first of the ‘reverse vending’ machines and hear how the retailer is introducing the scheme in its Scottish stores as a key part of its sustainability programme. At IKEA, shoppers will be able to recycle any glass, plastic or aluminium drinks containers purchased from the restaurant, shop, or vending machines in their Edinburgh and Glasgow stores. Once returned and deposited through the machine, for each item shoppers will be offered the choice of a 10p voucher to redeem in-store or a 10p donation to one of the stores’ selected charities.

‘Recycle and Reward’ schemes introduced in Scotland
Scotland will be piloting innovative 'Recycle and Reward' schemes, which offer money back for recycling empty bottles and cans.
IKEA, Dundee University, Network Rail and Whitmuir Organics are amongst the nine companies and organisations trialling the projects, which will reward people for recycling glass, aluminium and plastic (PET) drinks containers through a range of incentives such as money back, discount vouchers or vouchers for donations to charities.
The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, The Packaging Society and WRAP, a company dedicated to sustainability and reducing waste, have collaborated to create a website which provides support to those new to the world of packaging. The website, named The Packaging Hub, aims to be a one-stop-shop for packaging knowledge, with industry trends and thoughts updated regularly. The site is set out in easy-to-digest sections, with each step of the packaging process addressed. There’s an abundance of information available on the site, and further information provided in the links to numerous organisations that can also assist with materials selection. The website is designed for those new to packaging or who are delving into an area of their business they are unfamiliar with.

Ecover launch plans for
revolutionary plastic
Ecover have unveiled plans to launch an entirely new form of fully sustainable and recyclable plastic incorporating post- consumer recyclables (PCR), Plantastic – plastic made from 100 per cent sugarcane and plastic fished from the sea. Research from the Marine Conservation Society reveals that plastic debris accounts for almost 60 per cent of all litter found on UK beaches and it is widely recognised that vast amounts of beach waste ends up in the sea. Working closely with Waste Free Oceans (WFO) and UK plastic recycling plant Closed Loop, Ecover will be working with fishing
communities to collect plastic and reintroduce it into the recycling chain via its bottles. Trials have already begun on the exact mix of the three plastics which allow the brand to deliver what will be the first ever fully sustainable and recyclable plastic.
Rexam joins Aluminium Stewardship Initiative
Rexam, one of the leading global beverage can makers, has announced its support of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) to develop a global standard for aluminium sustainability, joining other large producers and consumers of aluminium. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative was developed to create a
Responsible Aluminium Standard that defines the practices required to drive ethical, environmental and social performance improvements within the aluminium industry. Rexam believe having an agreed sustainability standard will build credibility and confidence in aluminium as a sustainable material against a background where, increasingly, customers and consumers want to know more about the provenance of what they are buying. The standard will provide clearer oversight of where the aluminium comes from and the sustainability of the production and transformation process.
