Involvement of hiring managers is key in order for advisers to understand what it is that they look for, and what makes a successful hire. This information can then be fed back to students.

TRENDING TOPICS # #Trending topics What’s been trending on our Twitterfeed and LinkedIn Group this month? #marstweetshop

The talk of Twitter this month (for graduate recruiters, at least), has been the enviably innovative Tweets for Treats campaign, which cleverly weaves social media and on-campus engagement. The idea behind the campaign is simple – students are invited to tweet Mars in exchange for products and information about their roles.

Mars took their ‘Tweet Shop’ to nine universities. During on-campus events, students simply stand in front of Mars’ special vending machines and tweet @marsgradsuk with the hashtag #marstweetshop. The vending machine panel then displays a unique code which when entered

releases a Mars product and information on the company’s graduate scheme. Emma Mirrington, Head of Talent for Mars Chocolate UK

gives us a bit of background about the campaign… “The Mars Tweet Shop is a world first for recruitment and the first time technology of this sort has been used in the UK. We’re thrilled to say that since the launch of Tweet Shop, the @marsgradsuk Twitter feed has been extremely busy. This demonstrates a large level of graduate engagement with a project that showcases the culture of innovation inherent in the Mars business. It also shows how social media is a great way to engage with potential talent and over the past week the Mars Graduate UK Facebook page has reached almost 23,000 users, an increase of 1005%.”

What makes a good Careers Advisers day?

This month, members of the AGR’s LinkedIn Group have been swapping their top tips on how to run an effective careers adviser day. We’ve summarised some of the main suggestions above: • Involvement of hiring managers is key in order for advisers to understand what it is that they look for, and what makes a successful hire. This information can then be fed back to students.

• Employers should try to provide a breakdown of applicants from universities, with details of which part of the recruitment process they fell down at. This is invaluable data which careers advisers can use to

#CaitReilly vs. #IDC

Without question the most tweeted about graduate of the month was Cait Reilly, a University of Birmingham geology graduate who recently appealed against the government’s Back to Work scheme, and won. Reilly, who was forced to work in a Poundland store for no pay while she sought a permanent job, argued that the government’s back-to-work scheme was illegal, and an affront to her human rights. While many on Twitter agreed with the outcome of

Reilly’s court case, others, notably Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith, criticised graduates who consider themselves “too good” to stack supermarket shelves. “Who is more important?” asked Duncan Smith, geologists or shelf stackers, a question

which, not surprisingly, caused a division in views…

IDC surely misses the point. [Shelve stackers] should be paid. The only thing to gain from unskilled labour is a wage

It’s precisely the denigration of crucial but low-status jobs that leads folk like Cait Reilly to be appalled by idea of Poundland

What is your stance on this issue – does the Cait Reilly case reveal a worrying insight into graduate attitudes to work, or should we in fact be heartened by her determination to gain valuable work within her area of interest? Share your thoughts with us on Twitter!

shape their development programmes, and also use as anecdotal evidence when talking to students and departments.

• Greater clarity about employer cut-off points: what are the main things that will make an application or CV go into the ‘yes’ pile rather than the ‘no’ pile, and how many are cut off each year?
