HOW TO SET UP A SCHOOL-LEAVER SCHEME…


In this issue of Graduate Recruiter, we’ve heard from a handful of different companies who are making big strides in the early careers sector. As the market changes, AGR members will increasingly be forced to review their talent entry routes. With a booming school-leaver market just around the corner, we’re going back to basics. We’ve asked a few key AGR players in the school-leaver arena to share their tips on how to set up a successful school-leaver scheme. Here’s what they had to say…

“BDO will always be committed to recruiting graduates, but school leavers are making different choices these days compared with previous generations. Many are reassessing their career options and university won’t necessarily


be the answer for some. Firms like us need to respond to the changing times to continue attracting the best talent. “We recognised a long time ago that there was an


increasing number of talented, ambitious A-level (or equivalent) students who weren’t necessarily choosing to go to university. We created a programme which – over five years – allows a school leaver to gain the same professional accounting qualification as a graduate, yet also gain commercial work experience. And, importantly, earn money. “We’ve found that the exposure to dealing with clients, experiencing the importance of providing excellent client service and having plenty of responsibility aids commercial development and are crucial to the programme’s success. “The Grant Thornton school leaver programme was established five years ago although the firm has been recruiting people at this level for many more years. “In 2012, we renamed the programme ‘Accelerate’. The reason for this was


two-fold. Firstly, we wanted to broaden the appeal of the programme; it isn’t exclusive to school leavers. Secondly, we wanted the name to convey the pace at which
