BEYOND THE GULF International exhibitions currently account for the majority, or 60 percent, of RICEC’s source markets, followed by events organised by Saudi Arabian compa- nies (30 percent) and those arranged by regional planners (10 percent). In the coming years, Al Omran says,

RICEC aims to host more major global trade shows and to tap emerging markets such as Asia, which has been resilient despite the challenging economic climate. Over the past three years, for example, the convention centre has played host to an annual Chinese commodity exhibition. Al Omran admits that Saudi Arabia’s exhi-

bitions sector is relatively new compared to its Gulf neighbours, but the global exposure and public awareness about the kingdom’s meeting facilities and hospi- tality offerings have been gaining ground. “On the local side, RICEC is encouraging

all government authorities to organise exhibitions and conventions related to their fields of specialisation. We are also estab- lishing regional partnerships, which recently resulted in an Omani product exhibition being hosted at RICEC,” Al Omran says. As the Saudi government continues to

invest in developing modern conference halls and exhibition spaces across the kingdom, Al Omran believes the domestic meetings sector will be in a greater position to stage large-scale corporate events in the near-term future.
