Judging underway in South East Director of the Year Awards
Judges for this year’s London and South East Director of the Year Awards run by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and sponsored by PwC LLP, have begun the arduous task of sifting through the nominations
Reading-based Rodger Broad, director for the IoD in the South East, said: “These annual awards recognise the hard work, inspiration and management skills of business leaders in a wide variety of sectors.
“This year, 300 directors’ names have been put forward, which, in the face of these challenging economic times, is testament to the on-going hard work and excellence of business leaders in the region.
“From those nominated, we have more than 100 entries to consider for the awards. The judges have begun their work, but clearly have some difficult decisions to make.”
John Minards, South East regional leader of PwC, major sponsors of the competition, said difficult economic times made it all the more relevant to reward success.
He said: “Over the past 12 months, directors have faced some of the most challenging economic conditions in living memory. Never has it been more important to recognise and celebrate business leaders who continue to manage through the downturn and ensure business emerges fit for the future.”
HSBC Bank Plc, sponsors of the International category, added: “We understand that recognising and supporting the needs of an international business is critical in today's global economy and take great delight in seeing British businesses be successful in overseas markets. Thinking globally and acting locally has never been more important.”
The finalists will be chosen from across the whole of London and the
South East of England and invited to attend the awards gala dinner at the Landmark Hotel, London on Friday, April 19.
The judges are looking at various criteria including the candidate’s personal influence on their business, their corporate social responsibility and how they interact with their staff and customers.
Directors are competing in seven categories, including the Chairman’s Award for Leadership in Corporate Responsibility and Family Business Director of the Year.
The panel of experts includes Chris Dodson, chairman of Mortimer Technology Group from Thatcham, Berkshire; Alastair Storey, chairman and chief executive of Reading- based WSH; and Jarl Severn, of Owen Mumford of Oxford, together
with other winners of last year’s awards.
Last year saw two Thames Valley directors pick up awards, with Alastair Storey, winning in the Director of the Year of a Business of £100 million or over category, and Chris Bartlett of GCS Recruitment taking the honours in the Director of the Year for a Business between £25m and £99.99m category.
Other finalists from the region included John Rosling of Shirlaws (UK), of Reading; Peter Digby, managing director of Xtrac of Thatcham; and Manjinder Dale, chief executive of Reading-based Quantum Technology Marketing.
