Win your copy of How to become a business angel
For anyone considering the path of angel investor, ’How to become a business angel’ by leading investment expert Dr Richard Hargreaves is an excellent starting point. And this month five copies are available to readers of The Business Magazine
Angel investors are currently the most important source of capital for UK companies and entrepreneurs seeking up to £2 million in funding, a fact that is both recognised and rewarded by the Government through attractive tax breaks. Added to this incentive, helping start- up ventures with money and mentoring can be satisfying, fun and potentially lucrative.
How to Become a Business Angel (Harriman House, RRP £35) is grounded on Hargreaves’ 40 years’ investment experience, and offers essential, practical advice for aspiring investors in unquoted
companies. In a concise, readable manner it covers all aspects of investing and gives numerous invaluable case studies from real life.
Hargreaves said: “The UK urgently needs more entrepreneurial young companies to help our economic growth and pay for our public services. Despite this sector’s importance – generating much of the growth in new jobs – it has largely been abandoned by venture capital funds and banks. Instead, the single most important source of finance to such companies has become business angels.
“As someone who has spent his whole business life in financing smaller companies, I know how rewarding this can be, but also how dangerous it is. So in this book – which shares my deep knowledge and love of investment with the readers – I both encourage those who are tempted to take the plunge and offer advice to those who already make angel investments but want to learn how to control their risks better.“
Hargreaves has 40 years’ experience making investments in unquoted companies and as such is well placed to guide those who are new to the area through the process. He knows what to look for in potential deals, the risk-reward structure angels should demand, the times when legal advice must be taken and the pitfalls to be wary of.

DEALS AWARDS2013 THAMES VALLEY
Time is nevertheless running out for corporate finance advisers, lawyers, bankers, private equity specialists and other dealmakers in the region to finalise their submissions for these prestigious awards, which will be presented at a glittering gala ceremony at the Royal Berkshire Conference Centre on Thursday, April 25.
Deals must have completed between January 1, 2012, and February 28, 2013, and be geographically relevant to the area – either the target, acquirer, funder, law firm or adviser must be located in the region.
Judges will consider not just the size of the deal, but also the complexity, who led the deal, the mix of advisers, whether cross- border, completed to a tight timeframe, and a number of other criteria, and judging will take place in late March.
