LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

BY NEIL FORTNER, AVEE LABORATORIES

See You at the Annual Conference! G

reetings and welcome to a brand new year. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Holiday season as we

look forward to an exciting and prosperous New Year. Te movement for the legalization and

decriminalization of marijuana gained some significant ground at the end of 2012. On Dec. 6, 2012, Washington state’s law decriminalizing the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana went into effect. Colo- rado’s similar law became effective on Jan. 5, 2013. Tere are approximately 11 other states with similar laws on their books and it appears that several of these legalization laws will become effective in 2013. Tere is still a significant amount of con-

troversy regarding Washington’s law. For instance, it is still illegal to grow, transport and sell marijuana. Also keep in mind that marijuana is still listed as a Schedule 1 drug by the Drug Enforcement Administra- tion and that the use of marijuana is still a violation under the Federal Workplace Drug Testing Program. For more on these developments, visit htp://www.dot.gov/ odapc/dot-recreational-marijuana-notice. DATIA’s commitees are the foundation

that drives DATIA. Virtually everything we do at DATIA is driven by one or more of these commitees. Remember, all of these commitees are open to our membership and represent an excellent venue to get involved and make a difference. Each year at our annual meeting, the

DATIA Board of Directors has a face-to- face meeting. Tis meeting serves to set the goals and objectives for the organization for

the upcoming year. Board members serve as chairs of each of the commitees. Some commitees, given their size and complex- ity have co-chairs. Te Board will then meet telephonically several times over the upcoming year to ensure that the commit- tees are making progress in achieving their goals and to see what help the organization and provide to assist these commitees. I am very pleased to say that all of our

commitees have made excellent progress this past year and would like to take a moment to thank not only the commitee chairs but to thank all the Board members and individuals from our general member- ship for their tireless efforts. Tis year’s annual meeting in Orlando

is going to be one that you will not want to miss. A special thanks to Laura Shelton, DATIA’s Executive Director and to the Conference Commitee for puting togeth- er another outstanding line up of speak- ers, presenters and exhibitors. Additional information is available in Focus, DATIA’s electronic newsleter and our website. I look forward to seeing all of you at our

annual meeting. ❚ Sincerely,

Neil Fortner, MS, FTS-ABFT, TC-NRCC Chairman
