FEBRU- SCARY!

February starts with scares, songs, and Sondheim at the Teatre Royal, as the Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society presents Sweeney Todd on February 4-9. A huge hit in the West End, the company will bring the masterpiece of musical theatre to the stage. Expect a large cast, 23-piece orchestra and some memorable set pieces as the popular company unveil their major 2013 production. Te scares continue the following week as the stage hit Te Woman In Black makes its long-awaited return on February 11-16. Produced by Teatre Royal chief executive Peter Wilson, it sees a lawyer tell a horrifying story with the aid of an actor but the gap between make believe and reality begins to blur… with terrifying consequences. Te month then ends with the hilarious new musical comedy 9 to 5, which sees three office workers turn the tables on their sexist nasty male boss. Te show, which runs from February 25- March 2, boasts an all-star cast including Natalie Casey (Two Pints of Lager, Hollyoaks, and Legally Blonde), and West End and Broadway superstar Bonnie Langford. Audiences can enjoy 18 original numbers penned by the legendary Dolly Parton including the ever-popular title track and Dolly herself also makes an on-screen cameo appearance. To quote the musical icon, “What a way to make a living.”

RAGGY TROUSERS

As much as the Norwich Arts Centre often introduces new acts to us, trying to make a name for themselves, more often than not we’re treated to a monthly bill of acts who’ve already proved themselves in their own circles, and are now delivered to us in a hand-picked calendar. One such act is the Sara Watkins Trio. Watkins spent most of her younger years, nearly two decades, as singer and fiddle player for the Grammy Award– winning, bluegrass-folk hybrid Nickel Creek. She has toured with the Blind Boys of Alabama and joined the Decemberists on violin for live dates and now it’s her time in the spotlight, as her tour takes in the NAC on Turs 7th Feb. Also a proven favourite, now coming to the NAC is ‘Te Ragged Trousers Philanthropists’, which proved its mettle with 4-star Edinburgh reviews and hits our city on Turs 28th Feb. It’s a two-handed version of Tressell’s classic book, adapted by Stephen Lowe and directed by Louise Townsend. Townsend Productions have produced a gem of Edwardian humorous theatre with songs and music of the time. Tis hugely successful production tells the story of a group of painter- decorators who are joined by artist Owen, whose spirited attacks on the dishonesty of Capitalism, along with his socialist vision, highlight exploitation in the workplace and inequality in society. “How to turn some 600 pages of print into a fast paced piece of theatre. Answer; take two highly talented actors and stand well back” - Edinburgh Guide. For details on all the NAC shows, go to www.norwichartscentre.co.uk
