lights surrounding them made them even more enchanting and the vision of some sculptures became more prominent as they thawed slightly; in particular the melting ice framed the sparkling eyes and settled the feathers of the majestic eagle made by the Belgian team.

As the speed sculpting drew to an end it was time to have a go at sculpting for ourselves - how hard could it be? As we set to work crafting a relatively tiny penguin the incredible skill of the professionals became as clear as the ice we were trying so hard to mould.

My favourite sculpture and arguably the most striking, was the UK’s entry. Featuring Icarus falling from the sun this was the most dynamic sculpture, with a dramatic tale and a stunning silhouette to match. Speaking to Jonathon Lloyd (one half of the British team) he explained that they ‘shy away from traditional’ methods and designs. I can confirm that the finished article was a shimmering example of their skill and originality. Their speed sculpting entry was also beautiful in its own right. Spherical perfection, it was an intricate design encased in an ice globe. Small in size but big in detail it was placed in front of the towering Icarus, its dazzling dewy surface drawing my eyes in over and over again.

The snow pit, refreshments and friendly atmosphere was a bonus, surrounded by these brilliant breathtaking figures it was a great showcase of a fairly unknown art. The graffiti wall and ice chess offered an alternative, more interactive aspect to the festival and the master class is a must if you visit next year.

There was never a better excuse to embrace the bitter cold and enjoy these sculptures for what they are - an incredible art form which must be seen to be believed. Crafted with unmatchable skill and dedication this is a labour of love for the talented sculptors. A winter wonderland awaits, one of incredible beauty, which surely won’t last forever, but is all the more wonderful for that very reason!
