I think it all starts with making good songs. Now more than ever through the internet artists have more of an ability to take their music directly to the people. I guess the best way to go is to find your audience, your niche, and grow from there.
HM: What’s all the hoopla about NBA 2K11? Kose: NBA 2K11 was a big step for us. It was a highly successful video game that garnered us a lot of attention. We were the only indie group on the soundtrack but clearly had the most popular song “So Far”. Amongst major artists like Drake, Snoop Dogg, and Big Boi that says a lot. It also proved to us that all across the globe people could appreciate what The Redland are doing.
HM: Talking of ‘So Far’ and borrowing from your lyrics, are there any mistakes you’ve made you wish you could take back? Earv:As a group we spent a lot of time courting the music industry, but looking back on it that time would have better been used taking our music directly to the people. I’d rather be the people’s choice than the industry’s choice any day.
HM: Your last album was 2012’s ‘The Life. The Party’ talk us through that project? Earv:We wanted to show a different
side of our personalities on that album. We usually take a pretty serious approach towards our song writing. ‘The Life. The Party’ was us showing our more light-hearted side. My favorite song would have to be “Queen Without A Castle” it embodies the concept of the entire album very well.
HM: How does it differ from your 09 album ‘Dontknowwhatitmeans. com? Kose:
Dontknowwhatitmeans.com was musically and conceptually different in many ways. We made a concerted effort to blend our music with legendary rock songs. For example “Heaven” takes from the classic Led Zeppelin song “Stairway to Heaven”. It was very lyrically driven and showcased our appreciation for other genres of music.
HM: So what’s the next project? Kose: We’re actually in the studio working on our next project. It will definitely signify a growth for us as artists and as individuals. This next album will symbolize our appreciation for our global
audience and our continued effort to make the best music possible. Our time here in the UK will definitely be reflected in the next project. We plan on releasing it later this year.
HM: Since being in London what’s the best part of your trip so far? And favourite place you’ve visited/ partied/ eaten? Kose:I would say the best part so far is just interacting with the people. There are so many cultural similarities as well as differences that it makes it very interesting. We’ve been doing a lot of work but I must say Nando’s has already made a big impression upon us. We’ve had a chance to visit some nice dance clubs here, which has been a blast. When we’ve finished up recording we plan on taking a city wide tour so be on the look out for The Redland.
